Abu Dhabi has taken a significant step towards inclusivity with the launch of the Sahel Rating System, a comprehensive accessibility framework designed to transform buildings and public spaces across the emirate.

A New Era for Accessibility in Abu Dhabi

The Sahel Rating System, named after the Arabic word for ‘ease’, aims to create welcoming environments for everyone, including senior citizens, pregnant women, nursing mothers, children, and people with temporary or permanent accessibility requirements.

Following a successful one-year pilot phase, this mandatory system will initially apply to new developments, with plans to extend it to existing buildings and spaces in the future.

How the Sahel System Works

The Department of Municipalities and Transport (DMT) has developed three distinct categories for assessment:

  1. Sahel Community Rating – For communities and master-planned developments
  2. Sahel Public Realm Rating – Covering all types of public realms and open spaces
  3. Sahel Building Rating – Applicable to commercial, public, and government buildings

Each property or space will receive one of four ratings: Accessible, Adaptable, Inclusive, or Exemplar. These classifications establish clear standards for barrier-free movement throughout the emirate.

Implementation Timeline

The system will be implemented across three key stages:

  • Design Stage: Compliance verification through DMT processes
  • Construction Stage: Audit processes to confirm accurate execution of designs
  • Operational Stage: Functional reviews conducted every five years with updated certifications

Creating an Inclusive Society

Dr Saif Sultan Al Nasri, Acting Undersecretary at DMT, highlighted the importance of the initiative: “The Sahel Rating System is a pivotal part of our efforts to enhance navigability and create a more inclusive emirate. By introducing this system, we are reinforcing our commitment to guarantee that every individual, regardless of their abilities, can engage with the spaces around them with ease.”

The Sahel initiative aligns with the UAE’s Year of Community aspirations and reinforces Abu Dhabi’s dedication to developing an inclusive and sustainable society that improves quality of life for all residents and visitors.
