“Our inspections concentrate on the implementation of the new pricing policy for these essential goods. We’re checking that prices haven’t risen without justification and that they’re displayed clearly for shoppers,” Al Marri explained.

New Consumer Protection Measures

Starting December 2024, the Ministry of Economy implemented strict regulations requiring retailers to obtain approval before increasing prices of these basic items. The policy stipulates a mandatory six-month gap between consecutive price increases from 2025 onwards.

Ramadan Shopping Patterns

With Ramadan anticipated to begin on March 1, 2025, the UAE traditionally experiences significant increases in consumer spending. This surge stems from the cultural practice of hosting gatherings and sharing meals, leading to doubled demand for basic items.

Consumer Engagement Initiative

During his visits, Al Marri engaged directly with shoppers, gathering feedback about price stability. The Ministry emphasises the importance of consumer participation in market oversight, encouraging residents to report concerns through official channels.

Collaborative Approach

The Ministry is strengthening its partnerships with economic development departments across the UAE. This coordinated effort aims to prevent price manipulation and maintain fair market practices.

Consumer Rights and Reporting

Consumers play a vital role in market monitoring and are encouraged to report any concerning commercial practices through the Ministry’s official communication channels.
