UAE Salary Paid Late Every Month? What Employees Can Do

Your pay always arrives, just never on time? Under UAE rules a late salary can count as a breach from the due date. Here is when MoHRE steps in and how to complain.

If your UAE salary is paid late every month, you can complain even when the money eventually lands in your account. Wages are due on the first day of the following month under the Wage Protection System (WPS), and a repeated pattern of late payment can still be reported to the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MoHRE), according to Gulf News.

That matters for anyone whose rent, school fees or loan repayments depend on a fixed pay date.

When is a salary considered late in the UAE?

The WPS lets authorities track whether eligible private sector staff are paid correctly and on time. Article 22(2) of Federal Decree-Law No. 33 of 2021 requires employers to pay wages on their due dates.

Salam Pappinissery, CEO of Yab Legal Services, told Gulf News that under the WPS wages fall due on the first day of the following Gregorian month, and MoHRE starts monitoring from that date. Once the agreed pay date has passed, late payment can count as a breach of the employment contract.

What happens to employers who pay late

According to Pappinissery, action against the employer builds up in stages:

  • From day two: system alerts are sent asking the company to pay.
  • Day five: new work permits for the company may be suspended.
  • Day 11: if it is a repeat breach within six months, a fine and a downgrade in the company's classification may follow.
  • Day 16: in relevant cases, a labour dispute may be registered automatically.

You do not have to wait for any of these stages. Pay cuts are a separate issue: see whether your UAE employer can cut your salary or force unpaid leave.

How to complain about a late salary to MoHRE

Start with a written record. Pappinissery advises emailing HR and payroll with the pay date, month and amount owed, asking for a specific payment date and reserving your rights. Keep every reply.

If the delays continue, MoHRE offers several routes:

  1. Call the MoHRE call centre on 80084 for guidance.
  2. File a 'My Salary Complaint'. It is confidential, hides your identity from your employer and may trigger a labour inspection. See how to report unpaid salaries anonymously in the UAE.
  3. File a formal individual labour complaint if you want a specific unpaid amount recovered. MoHRE first tries to reach an amicable settlement, then may decide the dispute itself or send it to court.

If you work for a free zone company outside MoHRE's remit, go to the relevant free zone authority instead. DIFC and ADGM have their own employment rules.

What evidence to keep if your salary is always late

Pappinissery recommends a dated record kept outside your work email, including:

  • Your contract, offer letter, payslips and WPS records
  • Bank statements showing when each salary was actually credited
  • A log of the due date, payment date, amount due and amount received
  • Emails, WhatsApp messages, HR replies and MoHRE complaint references
  • Proof of any financial losses caused by the delay

Be careful with settlement papers. Do not sign anything saying you have received "all dues" unless it is true and you understand it, Pappinissery warns. Under Article 65(3), a waiver of rights that breaks the law is void, but challenging a signed document later is harder than not signing it.

Key takeaway

Your UAE salary is due on the first day of the following month, and MoHRE starts watching from that date. Put every delay in writing, keep records outside work email and use the confidential salary complaint if the pattern continues.

FAQ

When is salary considered late in the UAE?

Under the WPS, wages are due on the first day of the following Gregorian month, when MoHRE's monitoring begins. After that, late payment can count as a breach of contract.

Can I complain if my salary was paid late but I have now received it?

Yes. Payment clears that month's amount but does not erase a pattern of late payment, which you can still report through the confidential salary complaint.

Will my employer know I complained to MoHRE?

No. The 'My Salary Complaint' route is confidential and does not disclose your identity, though it may lead to a labour inspection.

Can I get compensation for a late salary in the UAE?

Not automatically. If the delay caused a real financial loss, such as bank charges, you may be able to claim it with evidence.

What is the MoHRE number for salary complaints?

You can call the MoHRE call centre on 80084 for guidance. Free zone employees outside MoHRE's jurisdiction should contact their free zone authority.
