Is an MBA Still Worth It in 2026? What Dubai Business Schools Say

An MBA is no passport to a job or promotion, Dubai business school leaders warn. Here is how they suggest weighing the return, choosing a school and deciding if it suits you.

An MBA in 2026 is still one of the best-known routes into business and management, but it will not guarantee you a job or a promotion on its own. That was the message from senior business school figures at the first Gulf News LevelUp event at Dusit Thani Dubai, where a panel asked whether the degree is a career accelerator or an expensive detour.

Why an MBA alone is no longer enough

Dr Nidhi Sehgal, head of school of business and humanities at Curtin University Dubai, said students need to understand that an MBA "is not a passport for a job or promotion". She urged them to focus on employability and transferable skills that will sustain them at work.

Salary still matters when calculating the return on investment, Sehgal said. But she argued that the degree builds other kinds of capital that compound over a career, and the return is not just financial.

That fits what UAE employers say they want. Human skills are rising up hiring lists, as our report on how Communication Tops UAE Employers' Wish List as Human Skills Lead Hiring shows.

How to judge your first job after an MBA

Dr Umesh Kothari, assistant dean and assistant professor at S P Jain School of Global Management, said graduates should not judge their first post-MBA job purely on pay.

Instead, he suggested looking at:

  • The learning experience the role offers.
  • The projects you will work on.
  • The contribution you can make.
  • The skills you will build, with critical thinking ahead of "the numbers".

Flexibility, adaptability and resilience matter because professionals must keep learning, Kothari said.

MBA or a specialist postgraduate degree?

An MBA is not the right choice for everyone. Joshua Jackson of Middlesex University Dubai said the right postgraduate route depends on where you want to go. A specialist postgraduate degree gives depth, while an MBA gives you a grip on the business side.

So ask whether your career needs broad business knowledge or deeper expertise in one field, rather than picking an MBA because it is familiar. If you plan to use an overseas qualification, check how it is treated here with UAE Foreign Degree Recognition: What You Need to Know in 2025.

Choosing a business school, and whether you need one

Amber Haque, associate director of Middle East development at London Business School, said where you study can matter even more than the decision to do an MBA. She advised looking at location, alumni network and faculty quality.

"They are not just buying a degree, they are buying an ecosystem," Haque said. She added that class contribution now counts as well as grades.

On artificial intelligence, Kothari said there was no fear in using it, but students must know how to use its functions.

Haque's simplest advice was blunt: "MBA is not for everybody." She recommended auditing your skills to see where you are lacking, then choosing the path that fills those gaps.

The panel's view was that the value of an MBA cannot be reduced to one figure on a payslip. Weigh the skills you will gain, industry exposure, leadership experience, your network and the career direction it supports. Then look at the roles you are aiming for on the JobXDubai jobs board and check what they actually ask for.

Key takeaway

An MBA can open doors in 2026, but it is not a guarantee of a job or promotion. Audit your skills, decide whether you need breadth or depth, and choose your school for its network, faculty and location as much as for the name on the certificate.
