After serving the community for nearly two decades, Sharjah’s beloved Safeer Mall has permanently closed its doors, JobXDubai can confirm. The shopping centre, which opened in 2005 and became a cornerstone of Sharjah’s retail landscape, ceased operations approximately two months ago according to a call centre agent at Al Safeer Group of Companies.

End of an Era for Sharjah Shoppers

The iconic blue signage that once adorned the mall’s exterior has been removed from the building located on Sharjah’s Al Khan Road. The three-storey shopping destination with two basement parking levels had established itself as both a geographical landmark and a cherished community space.

While JobXDubai reached out to management for an official statement with no response yet, some shopkeepers have contacted us to clarify that they remain operational.

From Humble Beginnings to Community Hub

What began as a modest discount centre was later expanded by Al Safeer Groups and rebranded as Safeer Mall. The transformation proved successful, turning the location into a popular destination for Sharjah residents seeking affordable shopping options.

The Al Safeer Groups started their UAE journey in 1985 with Shop N Save supermarkets in Sharjah. They later opened a discount market in 1997, followed by Safeer Market in Nahda in 2000, before launching Safeer Mall in 2005 on the Dubai-Sharjah highway.

Community Members Share Their Memories

For many long-term UAE residents, the mall’s closure represents more than just the loss of a shopping venue—it’s the end of an important chapter in their lives.

Afsha Noori, who moved to Sharjah 24 years ago and now lives in Dubai, expressed shock at learning about the closure.

“Safeer Mall reminds me of my early motherhood days when I had my firstborn child. We would go to the mall for most items needed for the house. From daily food to crockery and other household items, it was our one stop for all our needs,” said the 48-year-old Indian expatriate.

The mall’s competitive prices and frequent discounts were particularly attractive to budget-conscious shoppers like Noori, who typically spent three to four hours during each visit. “It was also the best place to take our guests for their shopping trips, as it offered a variety of goods at the best prices. We will miss our days at Safeer Mall.”

Building Homes and Memories

For Anjum Tariq, a Sharjah resident, the shopping destination played a crucial role in establishing her first home. “I have been shopping at Safeer Mall ever since I arrived in the UAE after my marriage 24 years ago. It played a significant role in helping me build my small and sweet home at the time. The news of its closure is an emotional setback for me. It feels as if a part of me is disappearing.”

Nostalgic Entertainment Experiences

Before the UAE became known for its extravagant malls with elaborate attractions, Safeer Mall offered a comprehensive shopping experience that included entertainment shows, dining options, and a wide selection of merchandise.

Puja M, now 23, recalls her childhood visits: “Safeer Mall was one of those first destinations for us, the early 2000s kids, that really captured the essence of a shopping complex. Nothing quite beats the feeling of going with your family to shop for groceries, and then being surprised by dance performances or acrobat-like acts.”

More Than Just Shopping

The mall served not only as a retail space but also as a practical resource for families. Varisha Shahrukh, an 18-year-old Pakistani expatriate, shared: “I am quite sad to hear the news of its closing down. My father used to go to Safeer Mall to buy uniforms for my school.”

Visitors to the UAE also found the mall to be a convenient destination. Nilofer Sheikh, who has been travelling from India to the UAE since 2001, made Safeer Mall a regular part of her visits. “Be it to buy groceries or just get a break from house responsibilities, it was a great place to visit.”

Al Safeer Group’s Continuing Presence

While Sharjah’s Safeer Mall has closed, the Al Safeer Group continues to operate hypermarkets and marts across Sharjah and Dubai, as well as Safeer Malls in Ajman and Ras Al Khaimah. The group also runs Century Mall in Dubai’s Hor Al Anz East, which opened in 2003.

As Sharjah’s retail landscape continues to evolve, the memories of Safeer Mall remain cherished by the many residents who considered it their “second home” during its 19 years of operation.

Key Takeaway

The closure of Safeer Mall after 19 years marks the end of an important chapter for Sharjah’s community. More than just a shopping centre, it was a space where families created lasting memories, found affordable products, and experienced some of their first modern mall entertainments in the UAE. Its legacy lives on in the stories of residents who found both practical assistance and emotional connection within its walls.
