Emergency Situation Disrupts Global Travel Plans

Dubai, 21 March 2025Emirates has announced the cancellation of several flights between Dubai and London Heathrow following a significant power outage caused by a fire at an electrical substation near the airport.

The temporary closure of Heathrow Airport, which ranks as Europe’s busiest and the world’s fifth-busiest airport, has forced the Dubai-based carrier to cancel multiple services scheduled for 21 March 2025.

Affected Emirates Flights

The following Emirates services have been cancelled:

  • EK001/002
  • EK029/030
  • EK031/032

Emirates has confirmed that passengers who were booked on these flights or were planning to connect to these services will not be accepted for travel.

Options for Affected Passengers

Emirates is offering affected travellers several options:

  1. Rebooking travel to alternative UK airports
  2. Rescheduling flights for a later date
  3. Contacting travel agents (for those who booked through agencies)
  4. Reaching out directly to Emirates (for those who booked directly with the airline)

“Customers are advised to check our website for updates before their travel and maintain accurate contact details via Manage Your Booking to receive the latest notifications,” an Emirates spokesperson stated.

The airline has expressed regret for any inconvenience caused by these cancellations.

Extensive Disruption at Heathrow

London Heathrow Airport officials have confirmed the facility will remain closed throughout Friday, 21 March. This decision follows a large fire at an electrical substation in west London that triggered a widespread power outage.

The London Fire Brigade reported that approximately 70 firefighters were deployed to combat the blaze, which has substantially impacted operations at one of the world’s most critical aviation hubs.

Global Impact

The disruption at Heathrow is expected to have far-reaching consequences for international travel, with airlines and passengers worldwide facing significant delays and cancellations. More than 1,000 flights have already been affected by the incident.

Industry experts anticipate that the impact could extend beyond today, as airlines work to reposition aircraft and crew members while accommodating displaced passengers.

Travel Advice

Travellers with flights scheduled to or from Heathrow – regardless of airline – are strongly advised to:

  • Check with their airline before heading to the airport
  • Monitor airport and airline websites for the latest information
  • Prepare for potential delays even after operations resume
  • Consider alternative travel arrangements where possible
