Dubai’s flagship carrier Emirates has cancelled multiple flights to and from Germany as the country faces widespread airport strikes on 10 March 2025. Travellers planning to fly between Dubai and German cities should check their flight status and consider alternative arrangements.
Flight Disruptions Confirmed
The airline has announced cancellations affecting several services due to “planned industrial action” at Frankfurt Airport. Passengers impacted by these cancellations will be automatically rebooked on alternative flights and notified directly by Emirates.
Cancelled Flights:
- Flight EK43 on 10 March from Dubai to Frankfurt
- Flight EK44 on 10 March from Frankfurt to Dubai
- Flight EK46 on 10 March from Frankfurt to Dubai
Additionally, flight EK48 scheduled for 10 March from Frankfurt to Dubai has been delayed. This service will now operate as EK8048 on 11 March, departing Frankfurt at 5:30 pm local time and arriving in Dubai at 3:00 am UAE time on 12 March.
Some Services Operating Normally
Despite the disruptions, Emirates confirmed these flights will operate as scheduled:
- Flight EK45 on 10 March from Dubai to Frankfurt
- Flight EK47 on 10 March from Dubai to Frankfurt
Other German Destinations Affected
The airline has warned that passengers may experience delays at other German airports including Hamburg, Munich and Düsseldorf. Travellers flying to or from these cities on 10 March have options to:
- Rebook flights to travel at an earlier time
- Travel to/from an alternative airport within the same region
To qualify for rebooking, tickets must have been issued before 8 March 2025.
Nationwide Airport Strike
This disruption stems from a major escalation in wage negotiations. The trade union Verdi has called for public sector and ground handling employees to participate in a 24-hour strike on Monday, affecting nearly all German airports.
Frankfurt Airport, Germany’s main aviation hub, has advised passengers to avoid coming to the airport entirely, with officials expecting more than 150,000 travellers to be affected. The airport anticipates virtually no departures will be possible.
Other affected airports include Stuttgart, Cologne/Bonn, Düsseldorf, Dortmund, Hanover, Bremen, Hamburg, Berlin and Leipzig-Halle. Germany’s air traffic control operator, DFS, confirmed it would not be directly affected by the strikes.
Union Demands
Verdi called the warning strike after unsuccessful collective bargaining discussions last month. The union is demanding:
- An 8% wage increase (or at least £350 more per month)
- Higher bonuses
- Additional time off
Employers have stated these demands are financially unfeasible. Negotiations are scheduled to continue later this month.
Advice for Travellers
Passengers are strongly advised to:
- Contact their booking agents if they wish to change their flight schedule
- Those who booked directly with Emirates should contact the airline for assistance
- Check flight status regularly before heading to the airport
- Consider alternative travel arrangements where possible
The German airport association ADV has warned that the short notice means many passengers will struggle to find alternative routes, with hundreds of thousands of travel plans likely to be disrupted.
Key Takeaway
If you’re planning to travel between the UAE and Germany in the coming days, be prepared for significant disruption. Check your flight status regularly, contact your airline or travel agent promptly, and consider alternative travel dates or routes where possible. Stay informed about the developing situation as negotiations between airport workers and employers continue.
