Dubai continues to push the boundaries of smart city innovation with the introduction of fully automated, ticketless parking systems across various locations. These advanced systems represent a significant leap forward in urban mobility management, eliminating common frustrations associated with traditional parking methods.

How Dubai’s Smart Parking System Works

The new parking technology relies on sensors and ground-level cameras (approximately 1.5 feet tall) that automatically detect vehicles upon arrival. These intelligent devices capture vehicle licence plates and register arrival times without any manual input required from drivers.

As demonstrated at the East Crescent of Palm Jumeirah, between Rixos and Anantara hotels, the process is remarkably straightforward:

  1. Drive in
  2. Park your vehicle
  3. Drive out when ready

No tickets, no barriers, and no need to interact with parking metres or mobile applications. The cameras can capture both front and rear plates of vehicles parked parallel to the road.

According to Parkonic, the private company operating this particular system: “No more waiting; no more hassle. Your licence plate is your access — just park and go.”

Payment Options for Smart Parking

The ticketless system offers multiple payment methods for added convenience:

  • Online payments via the Parkonic website
  • QR code scanning
  • Cash or credit card payments at designated booths
  • Assistance from on-site Parkonic staff

At the East Crescent of Palm Jumeirah, parking costs Dh10 per hour and operates 24 hours daily throughout the week. Meanwhile, public parking on the West Crescent remains free.

Salik Integration at Dubai Harbour

In a notable development, Parkonic has partnered with Dubai’s toll gate operator Salik Company PJSC to implement a “barrier-free, AI-powered parking system” at Dubai Harbour.

This integration allows parking fees to be automatically deducted from vehicles’ Salik accounts—similar to the system that has been operational at Dubai Mall since July 2023.

The AI technology scans the car model and number plate, automatically generating a virtual parking ticket. While Salik serves as the default payment method, users can also choose alternative options including QR Code, SMS, kiosk, mobile app, web portal, or Tap&Go.

Expanding Across the UAE

The smart parking solution is rapidly expanding across the Emirates. Parkonic recently announced bringing its parking solutions to multiple UnionCoop locations throughout the UAE, including stores in:

  • Al Aweer
  • Al Warqa
  • Nad Al Hamar
  • Al Quoz
  • Al Twar
  • Umm Suqeim
  • Motor City
  • Silicon Oasis
  • Al Barsha
  • Al Wasl

Five-Year Agreement with Salik

Under a five-year agreement signed in November 2023, Parkonic will promote Salik as the preferred payment channel for customers at all current and future locations. The company will pay Salik a percentage of their share of parking revenue generated through the Salik eWallet.

This agreement encompasses Parkonic’s network of more than 135,000 parking spaces across the UAE, including popular destinations such as:

  • Global Village
  • The Beach – JBR
  • Central Park in Dubai
  • Arc Towers, Sheikh Zayed Festival (P4), and Marsa Al Bateen in Abu Dhabi
  • Khorfakkan Beach
  • Al Suhub, Al Qasba, Heart of Sharjah and Majaz Park P1 in Sharjah
  • Umbrella Beach in Fujairah

Key Takeaway

Dubai’s implementation of fully automated, ticketless parking systems showcases the city’s commitment to smart urban solutions that save time and reduce friction in daily activities. By eliminating physical barriers, tickets, and manual payment processes, these systems create a seamless experience for drivers while efficiently managing urban parking resources.
