Rushing for the Dubai Metro with a low balance? You have more ways to top up your nol card in Dubai than ever, from tapping the card on your phone to paying at a grocery counter. Here are the 11 channels, what each one costs at minimum, and which ones work instantly.
nol card balance: the numbers that matter
- Minimum balance to travel: AED 7.50 on Metro, bus, tram and marine transport.
- Metro ticket office counters: minimum top-up AED 50 (since August 2024).
- Metro ticket vending machines: minimum top-up AED 20 (since 1 March 2025).
- Most online channels: minimum AED 5, maximum AED 150 per transaction, according to RTA.
- Maximum card balance: AED 1,000 for anonymous cards and AED 5,000 for registered and personal cards.
11 ways to top up your nol card in Dubai
1. nol Pay app (instant)
The nol Pay app is the fastest option on phones with NFC.
- Tap Top-up nol card.
- Hold your nol card against the back of your phone.
- Enter an amount between AED 5 and AED 150.
- Pay by credit or debit card.
- Hold the card to the phone again. The balance updates straight away.
The app also shows your balance and recent trips.
2. S'hail app
RTA's journey planner also tops up cards, from AED 5 to AED 150. Using NFC, the balance updates instantly. If you top up with your 10-digit nol tag ID instead, it takes 45 minutes to 4 hours to arrive.
3. RTA website
Go to the nol top-up page on rta.ae, enter your nol tag ID and email, and pay by card (AED 5 to AED 150). Allow 45 minutes to 4 hours.
4. Mahboub chatbot
RTA's Mahboub assistant, available on the RTA website and inside the RTA Dubai and S'hail apps, can also top up your card from AED 5. The same 45-minute to 4-hour wait applies.
5. RTA Dubai app
Log in with UAE Pass or your RTA account, open the nol section and enter your tag ID. RTA lists a higher minimum here, AED 30, with Apple Pay accepted.
6. Dubai Now app
Open the Dubai Now app with UAE Pass, choose Bills, then nol, and add your card. RTA lists a minimum of AED 20 for this channel.
7. Metro ticket vending machines
Every Metro station has machines that take cash and cards. Minimum top-up: AED 20.
8. Metro ticket office counters
Staffed counters at Metro stations top up cards from AED 50 and can help with card problems.
9. Solar top-up machines at bus stops
Selected bus stops have solar-powered machines. They accept cash only and also activate balances topped up online.
10. Shops and petrol stations
RTA-authorised agents, including grocery stores, supermarkets and ENOC and EPPCO stations with Zoom stores, can top up your card with cash. Find the nearest agent under nol service channels on the RTA website.
11. Bank apps
Emirates NBD, Emirates Islamic and ADCB let you top up through online or mobile banking. Minimums and fees depend on the bank (ADCB has charged an AED 1 fee). Allow 45 minutes to 4 hours.
How to activate an online top-up
Top-ups made with your tag ID on the website, Mahboub, S'hail, Dubai Now or a bank do not load onto the card until you tap it at a Metro gate, a ticket vending machine, a parking machine or a solar top-up machine. Make sure the card still holds the AED 7.50 travel minimum when you tap in.
Digital nol cards
Samsung and Huawei users can turn a Silver or Gold nol card into a digital card through the nol Pay app or Huawei Wallet. Once digitised, the plastic card stops working. As of this update, RTA has not confirmed a date for adding nol cards to Apple Wallet.
