Desk Job in the UAE? Why a Workout May Not Cancel Out Hours of Sitting

A large study links long leisure-time sitting with more heart attacks. UAE doctors explain why a morning workout is not the whole answer for desk workers, and what helps.

A morning workout may not be enough to protect your heart if the rest of your day is spent sitting at a desk, in traffic and on the sofa, UAE doctors told Gulf News. They pointed to a study in Frontiers in Nutrition linking long leisure-time sitting with more heart attacks.

For office workers with long commutes, exercise still counts, but so do the hours in between.

What the study on sitting and heart attacks found

The study followed nearly 476,000 people in the UK for more than 13 years, looking at leisure sitting such as watching TV, using a computer and driving.

People who reported more than four hours a day of leisure sitting had a higher rate of heart attack than those who reported two hours or less. Higher levels of moderate to vigorous activity were linked with a lower rate.

The findings show a link, not proof that sitting causes heart attacks. Risk also depends on factors such as age, family history, blood pressure, diabetes, cholesterol and smoking.

Dr Jan Strickling, a consultant cardiologist at Medcare Hospital Al Safa, said the four-hour figure is not a precise cut-off. It is "a useful reminder" that sitting for much of the day, every day, is worth cutting down.

Why a workout does not cancel out a desk job

"One of the biggest misconceptions is that going to the gym or completing a workout automatically means you have had an active day," Strickling said. Exercise is very beneficial, he added, but it does not necessarily make up for sitting most of the remaining day.

Long inactivity means the body misses the regular movement that supports circulation and metabolism, he said. Over time, this can contribute to weight gain and affect blood sugar, blood pressure and cholesterol.

Dr Mangesh Dande, a specialist in cardiology at Aster Clinic, Al Warqa, agreed: "Meeting the recommended weekly exercise target should not be viewed as a licence to remain seated for the rest of the day."

Simple ways to move more at work in the UAE

Most desk workers cannot avoid sitting, so the advice is to break it up. Dr Deepak Mullasery, a senior physiotherapist at Medcare Physio & Rehab Centre, said long sitting leaves the large leg muscles doing very little. His suggestions for the working day:

  • get up between meetings
  • walk while taking phone calls
  • use the stairs when appropriate
  • do a few sit-to-stands, ankle movements and calf raises at your desk

Dande added a few more:

  • walk over to a colleague whenever practical
  • park a little farther away if you can
  • try walking meetings for suitable discussions

For long Dubai commutes, Dande suggested adding a short walk before or after the drive, or on arrival at the office or home. If you want to know how your employer treats travel time, read Does Your Commute Count as Working Hours in UAE? MoHRE Clarifies.

At home, try a short walk after a meal or get up during a TV break.

How much exercise doctors recommend

Small breaks do not replace regular exercise. For most adults, Dande recommends:

  • around 150 to 300 minutes of moderate-intensity activity a week, or
  • around 75 to 150 minutes of vigorous activity a week
  • plus muscle-strengthening exercise on at least two days a week

If you have been mostly inactive, Mullasery advises starting gently and building up. Anyone with significant breathlessness, chest symptoms, significant pain, or balance or mobility problems should get an individual assessment instead of following a generic plan. Mental wellbeing matters too, as we explained in UAE: Are Employees Entitled to Sick Leave for Depression and Mental Health Issues?.

Key takeaway

A workout helps your heart but may not make up for a day of sitting. UAE doctors advise desk workers to pair regular exercise with frequent short breaks.

FAQ

Is sitting for long periods bad for your heart?

The study linked more than four hours a day of leisure sitting with more heart attacks than two hours or less. It shows a link, not proof of cause.

Does going to the gym cancel out sitting all day?

Not necessarily. UAE cardiologists said exercise is very beneficial but does not automatically make up for sitting most of the day.

Is four hours of sitting a safe limit?

Dr Strickling said four hours is not a precise cut-off where risk suddenly changes, but a reminder to sit less.

How much exercise do adults need each week?

Dande recommends around 150 to 300 minutes of moderate activity or 75 to 150 minutes of vigorous activity a week, with muscle strengthening on at least two days.
