Dubai’s flagship carrier Emirates has announced ambitious plans to double its premium economy seat capacity to 2 million by the end of 2025, according to a senior airline official.

Rapid Premium Economy Expansion

“Just to give you a flavour of the premium economy capacity, we deployed around 1 million seats and this number will increase to 2 million by the end of the 2025 calendar year. So we will be sitting in a leading position in terms of the premium economy capacity,” said Adnan Kazim, Deputy President and Chief Commercial Officer of Emirates, during a press briefing.

Kazim revealed that the significant expansion is driven by exceptionally strong passenger demand for this cabin class since its introduction.

Positive Market Response

The airline has observed an overwhelmingly positive reception to the premium economy product. “To start with, the product was well-received by the passengers. They liked the privacy, and we see more and more passengers moving from economy to premium economy,” Kazim explained.

Rather than cannibalising business class revenues as initially feared by some industry observers, the premium economy offering appears to be addressing specific market needs. “Rather than cannibalising the business, premium economy is catering to the need of the corporate business,” added Kazim during remarks after a press conference announcing details for the upcoming Arabian Travel Market 2025.

New Aircraft Deliveries Supporting Growth

The expansion of premium economy capacity coincides with Emirates’ ongoing fleet modernisation programme. The airline is set to receive approximately 12 to 15 Airbus A350 aircraft by the end of summer 2025.

“This aircraft comes with a capacity of 312 seats and with three classes – Economy, Premium Economy and Business. It gives flexibility in terms of the deployment and can fly to many regional secondary markets,” the Emirates CCO stated.

Emirates has already taken delivery of four Airbus A350s and begun operating them on selected routes.

Network Expansion Plans

In the first phase of A350 deployment, Emirates has already introduced the aircraft on routes to:

  • Edinburgh
  • Bahrain
  • Kuwait
  • Ahmedabad
  • Mumbai

According to Kazim, the second phase will commence after summer 2025, when the A350 will be deployed on ultra-long-haul routes. While specific destinations haven’t been confirmed, Kazim indicated that the aircraft could serve “anywhere from the United States to Australia.”

The airline is also targeting regional expansion with the new aircraft. “We’re expanding to places like Tunisia, for example… Many other kinds of regional places can adapt to the capacity of the A350,” he added.

Aircraft Configuration Details

Kazim clarified that A350 aircraft designated for long-haul routes will maintain three-class configurations but with slightly different layouts compared to those serving regional markets.

This flexibility in aircraft configuration allows Emirates to optimise the premium economy offering based on route characteristics and passenger demand profiles across different markets.

Industry Leadership Position

With this planned expansion, Emirates is positioning itself as the global leader in premium economy capacity. The cabin class, which bridges the gap between traditional economy and business class, has proven increasingly popular with leisure travellers seeking additional comfort and corporate travellers with restricted business class travel policies.

The move represents a significant vote of confidence in the premium economy concept, which has gained traction across the industry in recent years as airlines seek to diversify revenue streams and cater to evolving passenger preferences.

Key Takeaway

Emirates’ decision to double its premium economy capacity to 2 million seats by end-2025 highlights the airline’s response to strong market demand for this intermediate cabin class. The expansion, supported by new Airbus A350 deliveries, allows Emirates to capture additional revenue from leisure travellers seeking extra comfort and corporate travellers with business class restrictions. This strategic move strengthens Dubai’s position as a global aviation hub while demonstrating Emirates’ ability to adapt its product offering to changing passenger preferences and market conditions.
