Dubai International Airport (DXB), already renowned as the world’s busiest and most modern airport, has taken another bold step towards enhancing passenger experience with its groundbreaking ‘Unlimited Smart Travel’ initiative.

Passport Control Without Stopping

In a significant advancement coinciding with Dubai AI Week, the General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs (GDRFA) – Dubai has introduced a cutting-edge passport control system in the First and Business Class lounges at Terminal 3.

This revolutionary service allows select passengers to travel without stopping for identity verification during immigration procedures, representing a dramatic shift in how airport security and passenger processing operate.

AI-Powered Facial Recognition

According to GDRFA officials, the ‘Unlimited Smart Travel’ service integrates advanced AI technologies for facial recognition and identity verification, eliminating the need for traditional document checks.

“This service has been developed in line with the Directorate’s vision to improve the quality of life for travellers and enhance the efficiency and smoothness of travel procedures,” the GDRFA stated in an official announcement.

The Directorate emphasised that this service represents a “qualitative leap” in smart mobility technology implementation.

Processing 10 Passengers in 14 Seconds

During the opening day of the AI Innovations Conference on Tuesday, Lt Gen Mohammed Ahmed Al Marri, Director General of the GDRFA, announced the new technological upgrades that make the immigration process significantly faster.

A senior GDRFA official revealed impressive capabilities of the new system: “From our experience with the first smart tunnel five years ago, we learned how to use AI to identify individuals and develop this system to significantly reduce processing time – allowing 10 people to pass through in just 14 seconds without waiting for their turn.”

This represents a tenfold increase in processing capacity compared to previous systems, which handled passengers individually.

Beyond Document Verification

The new service marks a fundamental shift in approach to passenger verification.

“In this new phase, we are transitioning to an advanced system, which does not rely on documents or any other procedures – just facial recognition, using pre-existing data,” explained the GDRFA official.

The system builds upon lessons learned from the smart tunnel initiative first launched in 2020, which has been continuously refined with AI capabilities over the past five years.

How the System Works

The ‘Unlimited Smart Travel’ service utilises areas within airport lounges equipped with multiple cameras capable of capturing faces from any angle. This multi-perspective approach allows for accurate identification regardless of how passengers move through the space.

“This method has greatly simplified the process for us, especially with the expected 8 per cent increase in the number of travellers in the future,” noted the official.

Currently, the service is available only to departing passengers using the First and Business Class lounges at Terminal 3. However, expansion plans are already in development.

Future Expansion Plans

The GDRFA has outlined ambitious plans for broadening the implementation of this technology.

“The future plan is to expand this system and include arriving passengers. Travellers will need to register just once, and their data will be saved,” the official explained.

Industry observers have noted similarities between this initiative and the ‘Travel Without Borders’ project unveiled at GITEX Global 2024, suggesting a coordinated approach to next-generation travel facilitation across Dubai’s transportation infrastructure.

Benefits for Travellers and Staff

The GDRFA highlighted multiple advantages of the new system:

  • Strengthened traveller confidence in smart systems
  • Increased passenger throughput capacity
  • Higher satisfaction levels for both customers and staff
  • Reduced service steps
  • Accelerated passage through immigration points

These improvements align with Dubai’s broader strategy of leveraging technology to create frictionless experiences for residents and visitors while maintaining high security standards.

A Foundation for Future Growth

With passenger numbers at Dubai International Airport expected to grow by approximately 8 per cent in the coming years, innovations like ‘Unlimited Smart Travel’ provide critical capacity enhancements without requiring physical expansion of facilities.

The system exemplifies Dubai’s approach to handling increasing visitor volumes through technological solutions rather than solely through infrastructure development.

Key Takeaway

Dubai’s ‘Unlimited Smart Travel’ initiative represents a significant milestone in the evolution of airport passenger processing. By eliminating document-based verification in favour of AI-powered facial recognition, the system dramatically reduces processing times while maintaining security standards. As this technology expands beyond premium lounges to other areas of Dubai International Airport, it will further cement DXB’s reputation as a pioneer in passenger experience innovation.
