Officers must be on duty, in uniform, and driving an official patrol car to issue fines for a fleeing violation.

The Ministry of Interior has revealed alarming statistics showing that more than 1,000 drivers across the UAE fled from traffic police officers in 2024, despite substantial penalties for such behaviour.

Rising Trend in Traffic Police Evasion

According to official data, authorities recorded precisely 1,023 incidents of drivers fleeing from traffic officers during 2024. Sharjah topped the list with 315 cases, followed by Dubai with 241 and Abu Dhabi with 234. The remaining emirates also reported similar violations:

  • Ajman: 113 cases
  • Ras Al Khaimah: 83 cases
  • Umm Al Quwain: 21 cases
  • Fujairah: 16 cases

Beyond fleeing incidents, a staggering 11,254 violations were documented for drivers failing to follow police instructions. Dubai registered the highest number with 4,729 cases, followed by Abu Dhabi (3,722), Sharjah (1,546), Ajman (451), Ras Al Khaimah (284), Fujairah (308), and Umm Al Quwain (214).

Over 1,000 UAE Drivers Fled Traffic Police in 2024: Know the Penalties

More Than Just Traffic Violations

A senior police official explained that such behaviours transcend ordinary traffic violations: “When a driver disrespects or disobeys a traffic officer, it’s not just a matter of road safety—it’s a matter of public order and respect for law enforcement.”

Police follow precise procedures when stopping vehicles, with officers trained to handle situations professionally. “Drivers are not allowed to leave their vehicles, and officers are trained to avoid escalating tensions,” the official noted.

“We also consider the varied cultural backgrounds of drivers, as many people become nervous simply at the thought of receiving a fine.”

However, issues arise when drivers deliberately ignore or evade an officer—even when clearly approached by a marked patrol vehicle and a uniformed officer. Some drivers have been observed stopping briefly before speeding away, which may indicate attempts to conceal more serious infractions.

Penalties Under UAE Traffic Law

The consequences for evading traffic police are severe under UAE law:

Violation Fine Black Points Vehicle Impoundment
Fleeing from a traffic officer Dh800 12 points 30 days
Disobeying police instructions Dh400 4 points None
Refusing to provide identification Dh500 None None

Legal Requirements for Enforcement

The police official clarified important conditions that must be met for a fleeing violation to be legally enforced:

  1. The officer must be on official duty
  2. The officer must be wearing a proper uniform
  3. The officer must be operating an official patrol car

Officers in private vehicles are not authorised to issue such violations, as drivers may not recognise them as legitimate law enforcement personnel.

Key Takeaway

Evading traffic police in the UAE carries significant penalties including hefty fines, black points, and vehicle impoundment. Always cooperate with uniformed officers in marked patrol vehicles—attempting to flee not only compounds your legal troubles but potentially endangers other road users.
