Dubai has established an extensive network of Salik gates to manage traffic flow across its busy roads. The electronic toll collection system, implemented by the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), automatically deducts fees from prepaid accounts when vehicles pass through any of the ten strategically positioned toll gates throughout the emirate.
As part of Dubai’s ongoing commitment to accessibility and inclusivity, Salik has introduced a special exemption programme allowing certain residents and their family members to apply for toll fee waivers. This initiative reflects Dubai’s broader efforts to enhance the quality of life for all residents.

Understanding Dubai’s Salik System
Salik functions as Dubai’s electronic toll collection system, utilising RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) technology to charge vehicles automatically when they pass through designated toll gates. The system operates without toll booths or barriers for maximum efficiency.
When a vehicle passes through a Salik toll gate, the technology scans the Salik tag, and a toll fee is deducted from the motorist’s prepaid account. The toll rates vary depending on the time of passage:
- Dh6 during weekday peak hours (6am to 10am and 4pm to 8pm)
- Dh4 during weekday off-peak hours (10am to 4pm and 8pm to 1am)
- Dh4 throughout Sundays (excluding public holidays, special occasions, or major events)
- Free passage between 1am and 6am daily
A Salik tag costs Dh100, which includes Dh50 in credit added to the account upon activation. An additional Dh20 charge applies for online purchases.
Motorists can top up their Salik accounts online or purchase recharge cards from participating retail outlets. Maintaining an adequate account balance is essential to avoid penalties or restrictions on vehicle use.
Salik Toll Gate Locations in Dubai
Following the addition of two new toll gates in January 2025, Dubai now has ten Salik gates:
- Al Barsha
- Al Garhoud Bridge
- Al Maktoum Bridge
- Al Mamzar South
- Al Mamzar North
- Al Safa
- Airport Tunnel
- Jebel Ali
- Business Bay Crossing (on Al Khail Road)
- Al Safa South (on Sheikh Zayed Road between Al Meydan Street and Umm Al Sheif Street)
The Salik exemption programme demonstrates Dubai’s dedication to creating an inclusive environment for people of determination. By offering toll fee waivers, the city helps reduce financial barriers and improve mobility for those who need additional support.
