Students caught with vapes face serious consequences amid comprehensive health initiative
Dubai, UAE – 17 March 2025 – GEMS Education has announced a groundbreaking zero-tolerance campaign against vaping in its UAE schools, installing advanced detection sensors and implementing random bag checks to combat what they describe as “one of the most pressing health threats facing young people today.”
State-of-the-Art Detection Systems
The campaign includes the deployment of highly sensitive, tamper-resistant vaping detection sensors in strategic locations across GEMS campuses, including the soon-to-open GEMS School of Research and Innovation scheduled for August 2025.
These sophisticated sensors can:
- Distinguish between vaping and other airborne particles
- Send real-time alerts to school administrators
- Enable swift intervention when vaping is detected
- Activate audio functions that alert staff to potential issues
“By installing cutting-edge vaping sensors across campuses, we are setting a new standard in student protection,” said Lisa Crausby OBE, Group Chief Education Officer at GEMS Education. “This is not just about enforcement; it is about education, prevention, and ensuring our students understand the risks associated with vaping.”

Comprehensive Approach to Student Wellbeing
GEMS Education, the region’s leading private education provider, is taking a multi-faceted approach to address the growing vaping trend among young people:
- Enhanced Vigilance: Random bag checks and increased staff monitoring in targeted areas
- Education Initiatives: Anti-vaping education integrated into the curriculum
- Support Systems: Counselling sessions for students struggling with nicotine addiction
- Community Engagement: Collaboration with parents and health professionals
Students found with vapes will face serious consequences and participate in mandatory follow-up education sessions with counsellors designed to support them in quitting.
First Major Education Group to Implement Comprehensive Measures
“This initiative goes beyond banning vaping; it is equipping our students with the knowledge and resilience to make better choices for their health,” Crausby added. “We are committed to working with our parents, educators, and the wider community to ensure that our young people grow up in a clean environment and prioritise their wellbeing.”
GEMS Education appears to be the first major education group to implement such comprehensive anti-vaping measures, potentially setting a precedent for schools worldwide.
The organisation’s proactive stance comes in response to vaping’s recognition as a significant global health concern, particularly among younger populations.
