In a groundbreaking move for educational innovation, UAE-based GEMS Education has introduced a $1 million start-up fund aimed at nurturing young entrepreneurs. The ‘Next Billion Innovation’ initiative, launched on 3 March 2025, seeks to transform student ideas into global solutions with far-reaching impact.

New Funding Pathway for Student Innovators

The substantial investment will initially benefit students at the soon-to-open GEMS School of Research and Innovation (SRI) in Dubai. Set to welcome its first pupils in August 2025, SRI will provide a cutting-edge environment where young minds can develop their entrepreneurial skills with proper financial backing.

SRI students will gain priority access to hands-on support and direct connections to global start-up ecosystems. This advantage comes through GEMS’ partnership with an innovation platform offering an incubator programme for the most promising student projects.

Expanding Opportunities Across GEMS Network

After its initial phase focused on SRI, the fund will extend its reach to include participants in the established GEMS Global Innovation Challenge (GIC). This annual competition invites students from all GEMS schools to create solutions addressing critical global challenges with potential for meaningful societal impact.

Leadership Vision for Young Entrepreneurs

Sunny Varkey, Chairman and Founder of GEMS Education and The Varkey Foundation, expressed his enthusiasm for the initiative: “The entrepreneurial mindset doesn’t have an age barrier. At GEMS Education, we have always been passionate about supporting our student innovators in transforming their ideas into impactful solutions that can be taken to market and that will eventually help make the world a better place.”

He emphasised the organisation’s commitment: “The Next Billion Innovation start-up fund represents our long-term commitment to fostering the next generation of global leaders and entrepreneurs. We are investing $1 million to ensure our students need not look elsewhere for funding — because the best ideas should be driven by passion, not financial constraints.”

Premium Educational Environment

GEMS SRI, announced in January 2025, positions itself as Dubai’s most innovative premium school. With annual fees ranging from Dh116,000 for Foundation 1 to Dh206,000 for Year 13, it stands as Dubai’s highest-priced educational institution. Year 6 attendance will cost Dh152,000, according to Maryssa O’Connor, Vice-President of Education at GEMS Education.

The school will feature a dedicated creator and entrepreneurship academy giving students year-round access to state-of-the-art facilities including:

  • A ‘Disruption Hub’
  • Innovation rooms
  • Design labs

These specialised spaces will enable students to develop, prototype, and launch ideas with direct mentorship from industry leaders, university research labs, entrepreneurs, and specialist educators.

From AI-powered ventures to advanced product design, the academy aims to equip students with the tools and guidance to become tomorrow’s creators and changemakers.

Building on Past Success

GEMS students already boast impressive entrepreneurial achievements. A notable example is Aadit Palicha, a former GEMS Modern Academy student who left Stanford University to establish Zepto. His company delivers premium groceries across India and has reached a valuation of $5 billion—all accomplished by age 22.

Through the Next Billion Innovation start-up fund, the most promising student solutions will have opportunities to attract further investment, fueling development and scaling of their projects for substantial growth and impact.
