Many Dubai residents are reconsidering their daily routines following the announcement of changes to the city’s parking system. The upcoming variable pricing tariff will be implemented by Parkin PJSC next month.
New Variable Pricing Structure
Starting next month, Parkin PJSC will enforce a new variable pricing tariff across Dubai.
Peak hour rates:
- 8am to 10am
- 4pm to 8pm
- Dh6 per hour across all public parking zones
- Weekends and holidays excluded
Abu Hail resident Janet R explains the impact: “Our building has only one car parking space. We park our second car on the street in the D parking zone.”
“Currently we pay Dh12 per day. With the new pricing, this will rise to Dh20 daily. That’s over Dh500 monthly just for parking.”
Residents Changing Daily Schedules
The fee increase is pushing residents to modify their work routines.
Janet says: “My husband often works from home, but now he’ll likely go to the office more since it offers free parking.”
“We’re also planning our schedule to keep our cars out of paid spaces during peak hours.”
Parking codes in several areas have already been updated. Motorists have received app notifications that read:
“Please be advised that the zone codes have been updated, but the tariff pricing remains unchanged. For example, zone code ‘A’ is now ‘AP’.”
Businesses Looking at New Locations
Some business owners are considering bigger changes to protect their staff from rising costs.
Uma Bhattathiripad has had an office on Sheikh Zayed Road for over ten years but is now “seriously considering” moving elsewhere.
“My staff already pay for 9-10 hours of parking daily,” Uma explains. “Collectively, they’ll face more than Dh2,000 extra monthly with the new rates.”
“I’m looking at relocating to an area with better parking options.”
She hopes authorities will create more mass parking facilities around Sheikh Zayed Road.
“There used to be several lots offering daily or monthly rates, but most have disappeared. I hope RTA will introduce more mass parking facilities similar to those in Deira and Bur Dubai.”
Event Area Pricing Concerns
Dubai recently introduced a congestion pricing policy for event areas:
- Dh25 per hour near event zones
- First implemented at Dubai World Trade Centre during Gulfood
- Currently applies only during major events
Event organizers worry about attendance drops. Tanya Mokle, Project Director of GETEX, is concerned about their upcoming education show.
“We typically welcome 20,000 visitors over three days. This year, we expect fewer because of the Dh25 hourly parking fee.”
“It’s unreasonable to ask parents and educators to pay this much when exploring university options.”
Rescheduling isn’t possible due to university recruitment cycles. “Our event timing is critical for universities’ September intake targets,” Mokle notes.
Key Takeaway
Dubai’s new variable parking pricing is forcing widespread changes to daily routines and business operations. Residents are adjusting work schedules and businesses are considering relocation to manage costs that could exceed Dh500 monthly per vehicle.
