Dubai has unveiled an innovative urban transformation plan to establish car-free zones across key residential districts, marking a significant step towards sustainable urban living. The Super Block initiative, announced in early 2025, will reimagine neighbourhoods by giving priority to pedestrians and cyclists.
Four Districts Leading the Change
The transformation will initially focus on four prominent areas:
- Al Fahidi
- Abu Hail
- Al Karama
- Al Quoz Creative Zone
These districts will undergo comprehensive redevelopment to create pedestrian-centric spaces that promote community interaction and environmental sustainability.
Integration with Dubai’s Green Vision
Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, Deputy Prime Minister, and Minister of Defence, introduced this initiative on X. The project aligns with the Dubai 2040 Urban Master Plan’s objectives of creating a more sustainable urban environment.
Comprehensive Urban Development
The initiative coincides with several other significant developments:
Therme Dubai

- Set to open in 2028
- Features the world’s largest indoor botanical garden
- Expected to welcome 1.7 million visitors annually

- Average of 600 trees planted daily
- Green spaces expanded by 391.5 hectares (57% growth from 2023)
