Rising global oil prices and fresh US sanctions on Russian exports suggest UAE motorists might see fuel price adjustments in February 2025. Here’s what drivers need to know about the upcoming rates.

Market Indicators Signal Price Movement

International oil prices have climbed above $81 per barrel in January, marking significant movement from December’s rates. This surge comes as Brent crude averaged Dh77.55 per barrel, compared to $73 in December 2024.

Current UAE Fuel Rates

Present rates in the UAE (January 2025):

  • Super 98: Dh2.61/litre
  • Special 95: Dh2.50/litre
  • E-Plus: Dh2.43/litre
  • Diesel: Dh2.68/litre

These prices, maintained from December 2024, represent the most competitive rates observed in the previous 12 months.

Global Factors Influencing Prices

Century Financial’s Chief Investment Officer, Vijay Valecha, points to expanded US sanctions affecting Russian crude exports to major buyers like China and India. “The sanctions now include significant producers such as Gazprom Neft and Surgutneftegas, alongside 183 vessels involved in Russian oil transportation,” Valecha explains.

Market Response

Oil markets have responded strongly:

  • Brent and WTI prices rose over 6% since January 8
  • WTI traded at $73.99 per barrel
  • Brent reached $77.62 per barrel

Supply Chain Implications

The new sanctions could reshape global oil supply routes. China and India may increase their oil sourcing from:

  • Middle Eastern suppliers
  • African producers
  • American exporters
