Looking to switch your mobile provider in the UAE? You can keep your cherished phone number, thanks to the Mobile Number Portability (MNP) service. This comprehensive guide walks you through the process for 2025.
What is Mobile Number Portability?
The Telecommunications and Digital Government Regulatory Authority (TDRA) introduced MNP in 2013. This service lets you switch between UAE mobile operators while keeping your existing number, whether it starts with 050, 055, 052, 054, 058, or 056.
Before You Start the Switch
- Check your current account status – active lines are eligible for transfer
- Consider using remaining prepaid credit, as it won’t transfer to your new provider
- Have your Emirates ID ready
- Prepare to clear any outstanding payments with your current provider
Provider-Specific Transfer Steps
Switching to e& UAE
- Submit your request via the e& UAE MNP form
- Wait for a customer care representative to contact you
- Clear any pending bills with your current provider
- Complete the activation process
Moving to du
- Visit du’s dedicated porting webpage
- Pick your preferred plan type
- Select a monthly power plan
- Await SMS confirmation (within one working day)
- Receive and activate your new SIM card
Note: Postpaid plans require proof of Dh2,500 monthly income
Choosing Virgin Mobile
- Download the Virgin Mobile UAE app
- Select ‘Join Us’ and choose your plan
- Pick ‘Bring Your Existing Number’
- Create your account
- Complete verification with Emirates ID
Processing Timeframes
- Standard processing: 1-2 working days
- e& to Virgin Mobile: One working day
- du to Virgin Mobile: Up to two working days
Important Considerations
- Your number must be registered under your name
- Keep your current line active during the transfer
- You’ll receive updates via SMS throughout the process
- Virgin Mobile assigns a temporary number during the switch
Cost and Service Impact
The transfer service is free. Your mobile banking, Emirates ID links, and other services connected to your number remain unaffected after the switch.
