Dubai’s shift to sustainable transportation has reached a significant milestone as the number of electric vehicles (EVs) on its roads surpasses 34,970 as of October 2024. Supporting this green mobility revolution, Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) has established an extensive network of more than 740 charging points throughout the emirate.
Comprehensive Charging Network
DEWA’s Green Charger initiative offers various charging options to meet different user needs:
- Ultra-fast chargers for rapid power delivery
- Fast charging stations for efficient refuelling
- Public charging points for convenient access
- Wall-box chargers for residential use
Since the initiative’s launch in 2014, 16,828 drivers have embraced electric mobility, consuming approximately 31,674 megawatt hours of electricity through the charging network.
Digital Accessibility
Finding a charging station in Dubai has become straightforward, with DEWA integrating location services across 15 digital platforms, including their website and smart application.
Leadership Vision
Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, managing director and CEO of DEWA, highlights the UAE’s ambitious target: “The UAE aims to have 50 per cent of the cars on its roads electric by 2050.” This goal aligns with Dubai’s commitment to achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.
Private Sector Participation
To accelerate the adoption of electric vehicles, DEWA has:
- Introduced a comprehensive Regulatory and Licensing Framework
- Granted the first Independent Charge Point Operator (CPO) licences to Tesla and UAEV
- Created opportunities for private sector investment in green mobility infrastructure
