Dubai has marked a significant milestone in its sustainability journey with the opening of the UAE’s first textile recycling facility. Located in Dubai South, this innovative plant, operated by Landmark Group, specialises in converting seized counterfeit goods into recycled materials.

Pioneering Sustainable Solutions

The state-of-the-art facility, situated in the DWC warehouse, introduces a closed-loop system that transforms confiscated goods from Dubai Customs into valuable recycled materials. This initiative represents a significant step forward in sustainable waste management.

The facility’s advanced operations include:

  • Automated conveyor systems that efficiently transport wearable waste through various processing stages
  • Cutting-edge technology combined with manual inspection for precise sorting
  • Dedicated quality control measures implemented by trained staff in safety equipment
  • Specialised sorting processes for different fabric types and colours
  • Careful separation of plastic and metallic components from clothing items

Rajesh Garg, Chief Financial and Sustainability Officer at Landmark Retail, shared insights about their collaboration with Dubai Customs. “We received our first batch of confiscated goods last weekend,” Garg stated. “This partnership allows for responsible disposal of counterfeit items, which is crucial given that Dubai Customs identified counterfeit goods worth over Dh5.4 million in 13 separate cases during the first quarter.”

Public Participation and Incentives

The facility extends beyond processing confiscated goods. Residents can actively participate in this sustainable initiative by:

  • Donating pre-loved wearable fabrics at collection points
  • Receiving vouchers worth Dh10 to Dh20 for their contributions
  • Using these vouchers for purchases at Landmark Group stores

Strategic Advantages of UAE’s Location

The UAE’s central global position strengthens its potential as a sustainable commerce hub. As Garg notes, “The UAE’s strategic location and advanced logistics network make it ideal for receiving products, converting them into recycled or green items, and redistributing them globally.”

Future Impact

This facility represents Dubai’s commitment to sustainable practices and circular economy principles. By transforming confiscated goods into recycled materials, the emirate is setting new standards in sustainable waste management while addressing the challenge of counterfeit goods disposal.
