Dubai is taking a bold step towards becoming a premier walkable city with the announcement of an extensive 6,500-kilometre pedestrian network. Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, has introduced the ‘Dubai Walk’ project, marking a significant shift in urban mobility.

The comprehensive plan encompasses:
- 3,300 kilometres of fresh pedestrian paths
- Restoration of 2,300 kilometres of current pathways
- Development of 110 pedestrian bridges and tunnels
- Smart application for tracking walks and earning rewards
The initiative aims to boost pedestrian movement from 13% to 25% by 2040, reflecting Dubai’s commitment to sustainable urban development.
Diverse Pathways for Every Walker
The project introduces three distinct walkway models:
- Scenic-Leisure walkways
- City Connectivity walkways
- Community walkways
These paths will feature:
- 112 kilometres of waterfront routes
- 64 kilometres of urban pathways
- 124 kilometres of green corridors
- 150 kilometres of rural and mountain tracks

A standout feature includes a two-kilometre bridge connecting ten vital locations near the Museum of the Future and Al Ras area. This structure will offer:
- 30,000 square metres of climate-controlled space
- 30,000 square metres of shaded outdoor areas
Implementation Timeline
The project will roll out in three phases:
- Pilot phase: 2025-2027
- Subsequent phases aligned with Dubai Urban Plan 2040
- Additional 900 kilometres planned beyond 2040
Smart City Integration
Dubai residents will benefit from a dedicated mobile application offering:
- Walking data tracking
- Reward programmes
- Comprehensive route information
- Access to 80% of services within 20 minutes
