In 2023, the dynamic city of Dubai marked a remarkable year in the world of tourism by opening its doors to an unprecedented 17.15 million international visitors. His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, shone a light on these impressive statistics, validating the city’s strategic vision to climb the ranks as a top destination for both business and leisure.
The influx of tourists in Dubai signified an impressive 19.4 percent growth from previous years, positioning the city on the global map as a luxury travel hotspot. The heartening hotel occupancy rate, peaking at 77.4 percent, was indicative of the city’s allure, outperforming many of its international counterparts.
Dubai’s hospitality landscape has burgeoned accordingly, with more than 150,000 hotel rooms now available to accommodate this surge in visitors, as detailed by Sheikh Hamdan. Furthermore, the city recorded a remarkable 41.7 million hotel room nights occupied—an 11 percent annual increase and a significant 30 percent rise from pre-pandemic levels.
Helal Saeed Almarri, Director General of DET, celebrated the remarkable recovery of Dubai’s tourism sector, attributing it to a decade of strategic planning under the aegis of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum. Similarly, Issam Kazim, CEO of Dubai Corporation for Tourism and Commerce, pointed to the city’s extensive roster of unparalleled experiences that solidify its status as a top choice for international visitors.
With economic ripples felt across Dubai, the tourism boom significantly impacted the accommodation and food sectors, propelling a commendable 11.1 percent growth and lending to the 3.3 percent GDP growth within the first three quarters of 2023.
The city’s event calendar further amplified its appeal, with high-profile events like Gulfood and Gitex attracting more than 200,000 attendees in 2023 alone. Additionally, the burgeoning cruise and yacht sector, boasting over 3,600 berths across 15 marinas, is set to enrich the city’s tourism offerings.
As Dubai gears up to double its leisure and tourism spaces over the next two decades, per the 2040 Urban Master Plan, it positions itself as a sustainable, inclusive, and culturally rich global hub. Bolstered by record-breaking tourism figures, Dubai’s horizon sparkles with promise and the anticipation of continuous growth.
