You’ve perfected your CV, aced multiple interview rounds, and felt confident about your prospects. Then… nothing. Complete silence.

Sound familiar? You’re not alone.

The Growing Challenge of Employer Ghosting

Job ghosting—when employers suddenly cut communication with candidates—has become increasingly common in Dubai’s competitive job market. This troubling trend affects professionals across industries and experience levels.

Tina, a PR professional with 12 years of experience in the UAE, shares her frustration: “Over the past year, I have noticed a growing trend of candidates being ignored. I would attend interviews and never hear back, regardless of whether it was a small start-up or a large multinational firm.”

Her most disappointing experience? Going through four comprehensive interview rounds, including a final team meeting, only to receive no response to her follow-ups. Eventually, she was briefly informed they had selected another candidate.

The Different Forms of Ghosting

According to Mohammad Osama, CEO of GRG (one of the largest independent recruiters in the GCC region), job ghosting typically falls into two categories:

  1. Initial Application Ghosting: When candidates apply but receive no acknowledgment or response. This often happens due to the overwhelming volume of applications.
  2. Post-Interview Ghosting: When communication ceases after candidates have engaged with employers through interviews or discussions. This form is particularly disheartening as candidates have invested time and effort.

Free Work Disguised as Tests?

Another concerning trend is the request for extensive “test assignments” that essentially amount to free labour.

Zareen, a PR professional with experience in both the UAE and US, explains: “Recently, I have noticed a rising trend where companies ask candidates to complete assessments that are essentially free labour. I once spent considerable time creating a comprehensive PR strategy for a job interview. The company set a deadline, I submitted the work, and then, radio silence. Later, I discovered they had used elements of my strategy.”

The Psychological Impact

Being ghosted during a job search can drastically affect mental health. Kirrin Hilliar, a psychology professor at Heriot-Watts University, explains: “When people don’t hear back from employees after interviews, there’s a lack of closure. They’re left wondering, what now? It builds a sense of doubt and anxiety.”

This uncertainty often leads to:

  • Increased feelings of rejection
  • Rising anxiety about professional value
  • Self-doubt about skills and capabilities
  • Burnout from the repetitive cycle of hope and disappointment
  • Isolation in what feels like a personal struggle

Practical Steps When You’ve Been Ghosted

If you’ve been ghosted after an interview, Shazia Bharuchi, a UAE-based career guidance and development practitioner, recommends a strategic approach:

  1. Send a courteous follow-up email one week after your last interaction
  2. Express continued interest and request a status update
  3. If no response, follow up once more after another week
  4. After two attempts without response, redirect your energy toward other opportunities

Mohammad Osama adds: “It’s acceptable to check in every two weeks for up to two months. If there is still no response, let it go. A company that fails to respond after multiple spaced-out attempts is sending a clear message and reflects poorly on the employer.”

Importantly, resist sending angry emails. If you desperately need closure, try reaching out to other company employees through personal networks.

Reducing Your Chances of Being Ghosted

While you can’t eliminate the risk of being ghosted, you can take steps to minimise it:

  • Target appropriate roles: Apply for positions that closely match your skills and experience
  • Customise your application: Adapt your CV to highlight relevant qualifications and optimise it for Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS)
  • Maintain an active professional presence: Keep your LinkedIn profile current and network actively
  • Follow up professionally: Send thoughtful follow-ups after interviews
  • Set clear expectations: During interviews, ask about next steps and timelines

Beware of Ghost Job Postings

Beyond employer ghosting, job seekers should also be wary of “ghost jobs”—positions advertised despite being filled or never existing.

Warning signs include:

  • Vague job descriptions lacking details on salary or responsibilities
  • Positions advertised for unusually long periods
  • Automated or non-existent responses to applications

To avoid wasting time on ghost jobs:

  • Cross-reference postings with the company’s website and recent LinkedIn activity
  • Contact company employees directly to confirm if the role is genuine
  • Be cautious of recruitment agencies that request fees (legitimate Dubai recruiters don’t charge candidates)

Moving Forward After Being Ghosted

The most important thing to remember is that being ghosted rarely reflects your professional worth. Companies ghost candidates for numerous reasons, including internal restructuring, budget freezes, or poor communication processes.

Maintain your confidence, continue building your skills, and keep pursuing opportunities that value professional courtesy and transparent communication.
