A recent GEMS Education survey highlights a significant shift as British families increasingly consider relocating to the UAE, prompted by escalating private school fees in the UK. The research shows that education costs are reshaping migration patterns for British expatriates.
Key Survey Findings
The ‘Exodus & Education‘ report by GEMS Education reveals that 32% of UK independent school parents prioritise their children’s education when planning international moves. This trend follows the UK government’s announcement to implement VAT on private school fees starting January 2025, as outlined in the October 2024 Autumn Budget.
Global Migration Patterns
British families are exploring various international destinations, with the UAE standing alongside Spain, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and the United States as preferred choices. The UAE’s combination of premium private education and tax advantages positions it as a prime destination for families prioritising educational excellence.
UAE Education Sector Growth
Lisa Crausby OBE, Group Chief Education Officer at GEMS Education, reports an 8% year-on-year increase in British family enrolments across their 44 UAE schools. Additionally, UK-based enquiries have risen by 26% compared to the previous year.
“Students can start, continue, and finish their education abroad, achieving GCSE and A-level qualifications identical to those in the UK, while gaining international exposure and global citizenship skills,” explains Crausby.

Expert Perspectives
Professor Johanna Waters from University College London (UCL) emphasises the significance of education in international relocation decisions. Her research spanning two decades confirms that well-resourced families often seek overseas education options when facing uncertainty in their home country.
UAE’s Educational Excellence
The Emirates continues to strengthen its position as an international education hub, offering:
- British curriculum schools with internationally recognised qualifications
- A multicultural learning environment supporting global perspectives
- High academic standards aligned with UK education benchmarks
- Safe and stable social environment for families
