Dubai is modernising its water measurement system. Starting March 2025, Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) will measure water consumption in cubic metres rather than imperial gallons. This change stems from Cabinet Resolution No. (85) of 2023 and Ministerial Resolution No. (43) of 2024, issued by the Ministry of Industry and Advanced Technology.

What’s Changing?

The shift brings several key updates for Dubai residents:

  • Smart meters will now display readings in cubic metres instead of imperial gallons
  • DEWA bills will temporarily show both measurements during the transition
  • The change takes effect from the March 2025 billing cycle
  • No physical meter replacements are needed, as current smart meters already support both systems

This update streamlines water consumption tracking across the UAE. According to Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD & CEO of DEWA, “Using cubic metres as a standard measurement unit puts us in line with global practices. This makes it easier to compare water usage across different sectors.”

What You Need to Do

Dubai residents don’t need to take any action. Your smart meter is already set up for the new system. DEWA will:

  • Send official communications about the change
  • Include both measurements on bills during the transition
  • Update the customer dashboard to reflect the new units

Looking Ahead

This change represents Dubai’s commitment to international standards in utility services. As the city grows, such updates help maintain its position as a leading global city.
