Looking ahead to 2025, UAE universities are preparing to implement their own admission requirements. The Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research (MoHESR) has introduced this progressive change to align academic pathways with student capabilities and market demands.

Key Changes in Admission Policies

The new directive brings several transformative changes:

  • Universities can assess candidates based on subject-specific grades rather than overall high school scores
  • Institutions may create customised admission criteria for various qualifications within the National Qualifications Framework
  • Students can pursue academic paths that match their individual strengths
  • Universities have the flexibility to design programmes that respond to labour market needs

English Language Requirements Updated

The updated policy introduces revised English proficiency guidelines:

  • Students from English-language curricula outside the Ministry’s framework don’t need additional English proficiency proof
  • Those from non-English curricula must pass recognised standardised tests as per university requirements
  • Universities can offer conditional acceptance with preparatory programmes

Admission Flexibility for Different Programs

Ahmad Ibrahim Alsaadi, Acting Assistant Undersecretary for Higher Education Operations Sector, highlighted that this approach will increase student enrollment by:

  • Allowing focus on subjects relevant to chosen majors
  • Removing barriers created by unrelated subject scores
  • Supporting better alignment between academic studies and career paths

Master’s and Doctoral Programs

For advanced degrees, the policy maintains certain standards:

  • Candidates must hold appropriate academic qualifications from previous levels
  • Qualifications must align with the National Qualifications Framework 2025
  • Universities can set specific subject proficiency requirements

Student Guidelines

For prospective students:

  • Contact universities directly about specific admission requirements
  • Check if preparatory programs are needed
  • Verify curriculum equivalency with Ministry standards
  • Review subject-specific grade requirements for chosen programs

This policy reform represents UAE’s commitment to modernising its education sector, making higher education more accessible while maintaining academic standards.
