Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has launched a revolutionary transport solution that transforms the daily commute between Hessa Street and Al Khail Road. The newly opened two-lane bridge spans 1,000 metres, reducing travel time from 15 minutes to just 3 minutes.
Strategic Infrastructure Enhancement
The Dh689-million development stands at 54% completion, offering improved connectivity to Dubai’s centre and Dubai International Airport. This strategic project extends across 4.5 kilometres, linking Sheikh Zayed Road to Al Khail Road.
The infrastructure upgrade benefits key residential zones:
- Al Sufouh 2
- Al Barsha Residential Area
- Jumeirah Village Circle
By 2030, these areas are projected to house more than 640,000 residents. The enhancement doubles Hessa Street’s vehicular capacity from 8,000 to 16,000 vehicles per hour across both directions.
Four Major Junction Improvements
The project introduces significant upgrades at four crucial intersections, scheduled for completion in Q4 2025:
- Sheikh Zayed Road Junction
- Features a new two-lane directional ramp
- Spans over Dubai Metro’s Red Line
- Facilitates right-turn traffic flow towards Emirates Road
- First Al Khail Road Junction
- Expands existing bridge lanes from three to four in each direction
- Implements enhanced surface-level signal systems
- Asayel Street Junction
- Doubles current bridge capacity to four lanes each way
- Updates signal systems for improved traffic management
- Al Khail Road Junction
- Introduces a two-lane direct ramp
- Streamlines northbound traffic flow to Sharjah
Pioneering Sustainable Mobility
The development incorporates 13.5 kilometres of dedicated cycling and e-scooter tracks, creating a vital link between Al Sufouh and Dubai Hills. This sustainable transport corridor features:
- Two specialised bridges across Sheikh Zayed Road and Al Khail Road
- 5-metre wide crossings with dedicated spaces:
- 3 metres for cyclists and e-scooter users
- 2 metres for pedestrians
- Capacity for 5,200 users per hour
- Direct connections to Dubai Internet City Metro Station
- Integration with commercial districts
This comprehensive infrastructure project represents Dubai’s commitment to efficient urban mobility and sustainable transportation solutions, setting new standards for city planning and development.
