Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) and Dubai Police have announced a significant change in traffic management: trucks will be banned from Emirates Road during evening peak hours, specifically between Al Awir Street and Sharjah, starting January 1, 2025.

New Restrictions and Timing

The restriction will be enforced from 5:30 PM to 8:00 PM, targeting one of Dubai’s busiest corridors during peak evening traffic. This development follows the successful implementation of similar restrictions on Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road earlier in 2024.

Current Truck Movement Regulations

Dubai maintains strict control over truck movement across various locations:

  • Complete Ban Areas: Al Ittihad Street, Meydan Street, and all crossings
  • 16-Hour Restriction Zones (6 AM to 10 PM): Sheikh Zayed Road and residential areas near Sharjah, including Al Mizhar, Al Muhaisnah, and Oud Al Muteena
  • Peak Hours Restriction Areas: Airport Street, Oman Street, and Damascus Street face restrictions during:
    • Morning: 6:30 AM to 8:30 AM
    • Afternoon: 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM
    • Evening: 5:30 PM to 8:00 PM

Supporting Infrastructure Development

The RTA has launched an extensive development plan for truck facilities, including:

  • 19 dedicated rest areas spanning 300,000 square metres
  • Accommodation for approximately 1,000 trucks
  • Strategic locations along major routes including Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road and Dubai-Hatta Road

New Driver Support Facilities

Three integrated stations will offer comprehensive services:

  • Fuel stations and maintenance workshops
  • Accommodation and rest facilities
  • Food and prayer areas
  • Healthcare services
  • Essential amenities including laundry and exchange services

Official Statements

Major General Saif Muhair Al Mazrouei from Dubai Police emphasised that the decision follows thorough technical studies. He noted that 792 violations were recorded for non-compliance with existing truck movement restrictions.

Hussain Al Banna, CEO of RTA’s Traffic and Roads Agency, confirmed that the implementation involves coordination with key stakeholders including the Department of Economy and Tourism, DP World, and Dubai Airports.

Implementation Strategy

The authorities will:

  • Install informational signs at restriction points
  • Launch multilingual awareness campaigns
  • Provide alternative route guidance
  • Monitor compliance through enforcement measures

Impact on Traffic Management

The restriction aims to:

  • Reduce congestion during peak hours
  • Improve road safety standards
  • Decrease truck-related incidents
  • Enhance traffic flow between Dubai and Sharjah
  • Support environmental sustainability through reduced emissions

Transport companies and truck drivers are advised to plan their routes accordingly and utilise the designated rest areas during restriction periods.
