A revolutionary healthcare initiative in the UAE has helped more than 15,000 residents reverse their pre-diabetic condition, marking a significant breakthrough in diabetes prevention.

Record-Breaking Screening Programme

The Ministry of Health and Prevention’s (MoHAP) nationwide campaign has exceeded expectations, screening 150,624 residents – surpassing the initial target of 100,000. This massive health screening drive revealed crucial insights about diabetes risk factors in the UAE population.

Key Findings

  • 27.3% of participants were pre-diabetic
  • 6.5% had undiagnosed diabetes
  • 66.2% showed normal glucose levels
  • Over 41,120 participants discovered their pre-diabetic status

Age Distribution Analysis

The screening results highlighted concerning trends across age groups:

  • 67% of pre-diabetic cases: Ages 36-60
  • 24% of pre-diabetic cases: Ages 18-35
  • 6% of pre-diabetic cases: Ages 60+

Success Through Lifestyle Changes

The campaign’s follow-up results demonstrated remarkable progress:

  • 37.1% of pre-diabetic participants returned to normal blood sugar levels within three months
  • Success rate increased to 37.5% after six months
  • Approximately 15,420 residents prevented progression to diabetes

Breaking Misconceptions

While obesity correlated with pre-diabetes in 36% of cases, an important finding showed that 66% of pre-diabetic individuals were not obese. This discovery emphasises that diabetes risk extends beyond visible physical characteristics.

Campaign Evolution

The initiative began with a 100-day “Show the Red Card to Diabetes” programme under the Government Accelerators Programme, which screened 12,000 residents – doubling its initial 5,000-test target. This success led to the expanded year-long campaign.

Future Directions

The campaign’s success has prompted health authorities to expand free HbA1C testing to university students, addressing the rising concern of pre-diabetes among younger populations.

Expert Perspective

Dr Buthaina Bin Belaila, Head of Non-Communicable Diseases and Mental Health Department at MoHAP, emphasises that early detection through screening plays a vital role in preventing diabetes progression.

Take Action

Residents interested in diabetes screening can contact their nearest healthcare facility or watch for upcoming free screening events in their area.
