The United Arab Emirates continues to solidify its position as a global tourism powerhouse, with the sector playing an increasingly vital role in the nation’s economic growth. Recent data and expert insights reveal a remarkable surge in international visitors and tourism spending, outpacing regional trends and setting new benchmarks for the industry.

Surge in International Visitors and Spending

According to VisaNet data, the UAE has experienced a staggering 70% increase in international visitor numbers from Q2 2022 to Q2 2024. Even more impressive is the near doubling of tourism spending during the same period. This growth significantly outperforms the overall trend in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) region.

Dr Saeeda Jaffar, Senior Vice President and Group Country Manager for Visa GCC, emphasises the extraordinary nature of the UAE’s tourism landscape: “We’ve seen an unprecedented surge in tourism. With growth and expansion that outpaces many other regions, tourism remains a top priority in the UAE.”

UAE Dominates GCC Tourism

The UAE’s prominence in regional tourism is clear:

  • It accounted for 53-54% of the GCC’s international travellers from 2022 to 2024.
  • Together with Saudi Arabia, the UAE represents 75% of traveller share and 85% of spending share in the GCC.
  • The GCC region saw a 45% year-on-year increase in international travellers from 2022 to 2023, followed by an additional 19% growth in 2024.

Economic Impact and Future Projections

The World Travel & Tourism Council projects that travel and tourism will contribute a substantial $64.4 billion to the UAE’s GDP in 2024. This aligns with other positive indicators:

  • Dubai International Airport (DXB) has reclaimed its title as the world’s busiest international airport, surpassing pre-pandemic traffic levels.
  • International visitor numbers to the UAE in 2023 surged nearly 40% compared to 2019, according to ForwardKeys.
  • Forecasts suggest an addition of 17.3 million international tourist arrivals to the UAE from 2024 to 2029.
  • The tourism sector’s contribution to GDP is expected to increase by 2.6 percentage points between 2023 and 2028.

Retail Spending and Consumer Behaviour

Retail spending from international visitors has seen a significant revival:

  • Average increase of almost 40% in 2023
  • Return of affluent travellers and longer stays contributing to increased average retail spend per trip
  • Strong resurgence in spending on services like shopping, dining, and accommodation

Digital Transformation in Travel

The UAE’s tech-savvy population is driving a shift towards digital payment methods:

  • Over 70% of UAE travellers are comfortable using digital wallets while travelling
  • Digital payments have become a fundamental part of travel expectations and preferences

Looking Ahead: Infrastructure and Investment

Major infrastructure projects, such as the Al Maktoum International Airport, which aims to accommodate 260 million passengers annually, demonstrate the UAE’s ambitious economic vision and commitment to maintaining its position as a global tourism leader.

Dr Jaffar emphasises the importance of continued investment: “Infrastructure and technology investments are critical to enhance travel experiences, making them seamless, convenient, and enjoyable.”

As the UAE continues to innovate and invest in its tourism sector, the future looks bright for this key driver of economic growth. With its blend of cutting-edge infrastructure, world-class attractions, and strategic location, the UAE is well-positioned to capitalise on the global travel rebound and further cement its status as a premier tourism destination.
