In an exclusive interview, Major Abdullah Al Sheihi, Acting Director of the Cyber Crime Department at Dubai Police, has issued a stark warning about the risks associated with sharing personal information through AI applications, particularly chatbots like ChatGPT.
The Double-Edged Sword of AI
Artificial Intelligence (AI) has become an integral part of our daily lives, assisting with tasks ranging from research to email composition. However, Major Al Sheihi emphasises that this technology is not without its dangers.
“AI applications have become crucial for many users, given their inputs for preparing research, writing articles, responding to emails, and more. However, there is a downside to it,” he explains.
While these AI tools may seem like trustworthy virtual companions, they can pose significant risks in the future. The recent introduction of voice features has made these applications even more engaging, leading users to share increasingly personal information.
“You find someone telling the AI robot everything about their life, and they might even start explaining their worries and personal circumstances to it. This is wrong because Artificial Intelligence has tremendous analytical capabilities and an infinite memory,” Major Al Sheihi cautions.
The Risks of Oversharing
The danger lies in the AI’s ability to gather and analyse vast amounts of data. As users interact more with these applications, they unknowingly create a comprehensive profile of themselves. This data could potentially infringe on personal privacy or be misused in the future.
Major Al Sheihi warns, “The device gathers data about users, learning from the information provided. Consequently, some of this data might infringe on the privacy of others.”
While no reports of misuse have been received yet, the official acknowledges that problems may arise in the future as this is a relatively new area of technology.
Impact on Cognitive Abilities
Another concern highlighted by Major Al Sheihi is the potential impact on cognitive abilities, especially among younger users. The increased reliance on AI for tasks like writing research papers or rephrasing texts could lead to a decline in critical thinking skills.
“Youngsters must be especially careful as it diminishes their cognitive abilities at an early age. As it is, they are more vulnerable to the risks of cybercrime when using these technologies,” he states.
Optimal Use of AI Tools
Despite these warnings, Major Al Sheihi emphasises that AI tools can significantly enhance research and learning when used judiciously. He advises:
- Use AI to aid research, but always verify facts from multiple sources.
- Engage with ideas generated by AI to inspire creativity and innovation.
- Avoid over-reliance on applications like ChatGPT to maintain critical thinking abilities.
Cybercrime and AI Misuse
The Dubai Police Cyber Crime Department handles over 100 cybercrime reports daily through their e-Crime platform. These include cases of hacked social media accounts and requests for account recovery support.
Major Al Sheihi also highlighted the potential for AI misuse in creating deepfake videos, which could lead to fraudulent activities involving the likeness of celebrities or influencers.
The Monopoly Case: A Cautionary Tale
To illustrate the potential for AI misuse, Major Al Sheihi shared details of the “Monopoly” case, a sophisticated electronic fraud operation targeting foreign companies. The operation, which spanned from 2020 to early 2024, resulted in the arrest of 43 suspects from 12 different nationalities and the recovery of $113 million.
The criminals used advanced techniques, including AI, to hack email accounts, impersonate company executives, and orchestrate large-scale fund transfers. This case serves as a stark reminder of the need for vigilance in our increasingly digital world.
Staying Safe in the AI Era
As we continue to integrate AI into our daily lives, it’s crucial to remain aware of the potential risks. Here are some key takeaways:
- Be cautious about sharing personal information with AI applications.
- Use AI tools to enhance learning and productivity, but don’t rely on them exclusively.
- Verify information from multiple sources, especially for important decisions.
- Stay informed about the latest cybersecurity threats and best practices.
By following these guidelines, we can harness the benefits of AI while minimising the associated risks. As Major Al Sheihi concludes, “Risk management is essential in addressing various challenges” in this new technological landscape.
