Dubai’s road network has taken a giant leap forward with the opening of two state-of-the-art bridges, dramatically reducing travel times for commuters. These new structures, part of the Garn Al Sabkha-Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road Intersection Improvement Project, promise to transform the city’s traffic landscape.
A Game-Changer for Dubai’s Roads
The first bridge, a 601-metre marvel, boasts two lanes and can handle an impressive 3,200 vehicles per hour. It’s designed to streamline eastward traffic from Garn Al Sabkha Street to Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road, then northward towards Al Qusais and Deira.
Not to be outdone, the second bridge stretches 664 metres and also features two lanes. This engineering feat eliminates traffic overlap for vehicles travelling southward from Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road towards Al Yalayis Street and Jebel Ali Port. Like its counterpart, it’s built to accommodate 3,200 vehicles hourly.
The Final Piece of the Puzzle
But wait, there’s more! The project’s crowning achievement is set to debut this October. A mammoth 943-metre bridge will connect Garn Al Sabkha Street with Al Asayel Street. With two lanes in each direction, it’s poised to handle a staggering 8,000 vehicles per hour, ensuring smooth sailing between Sheikh Zayed Road and Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road.
The Brains Behind the Operation
Mattar Al Tayer, Director General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors at RTA, shared some exciting news. The project has hit a remarkable 97% completion rate, guided by the visionary directives of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai.
Al Tayer emphasised the project’s significance: “It’s a vital link between Sheikh Zayed Road and Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road, improving traffic flow between these major arteries, First Al Khail Road, and Al Asayel Street.”
A Bridge to the Future
When fully operational, the project will slash journey times dramatically:
- From Garn Al Sabkha Street to Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road (towards Al Qusais and Deira): 40% reduction, from 20 minutes to just 12 minutes during peak hours.
- From Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road to Al Yalayes Street (towards Jebel Ali Port): A whopping 70% reduction, from 21 minutes to a mere 7 minutes.
More Than Just Bridges
The project isn’t just about bridges. It encompasses 7km of road works, including:
- Improvements to surface intersections on the service road parallel to Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road
- Enhanced streetlights and traffic signals
- Upgraded traffic systems
- New stormwater drainage networks
- Improved irrigation systems
Part of a Bigger Picture
This ambitious project is a key component of RTA’s master plan to develop strategic east-west traffic corridors and arterial roads. It complements recently completed projects like Al Yalayes Street and Expo Street, supporting Dubai’s ever-growing mobility networks and serving numerous development projects on both sides of these crucial thoroughfares.
As Dubai continues to evolve and expand, these new bridges stand as a testament to the city’s commitment to cutting-edge infrastructure and efficient urban planning. For residents and visitors alike, the future of commuting in Dubai looks brighter – and faster – than ever before.
