In a groundbreaking move for urban air mobility in the UAE, Joby Aviation, Inc. has taken the lead in the race to bring air taxis to the Emirates. The US-based company has become the first to apply for certification as an air taxi operator in the UAE, marking a significant milestone in the country’s transportation future.

Pioneering Air Taxi Certification in the UAE

Joby Aviation‘s application for an air operator certificate from the UAE General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) represents a crucial step towards establishing commercial air taxi services in the country. This certificate is mandatory for operating commercial air transport within the UAE, highlighting the seriousness of Joby’s intentions to revolutionize urban mobility in the region.

The company’s founder and CEO, JoeBen Bevirt, personally submitted the application to Saif Mohammed Al Suwaidi, Director General of GCAA, during the inaugural Advanced Air Mobility Summit in Montreal, Canada. This high-level interaction underscores the importance of the initiative for both Joby Aviation and the UAE.

The Path to Certification

Joby Aviation’s journey to certification in the UAE will involve a comprehensive five-stage process:

  1. Completion of air taxi operating manuals
  2. Inspections of UAE-based facilities
  3. GCAA observation of pilot training
  4. GCAA observation of aircraft mechanic training
  5. GCAA observation of flight operations

This rigorous process mirrors the one Joby successfully navigated in the United States, where it received its Part 135 Air Carrier Certificate from the Federal Aviation Administration in May 2022.

Joby’s Air Taxi: A Game-Changer for Urban Transport

Joby’s electric air taxi is set to transform urban travel in the UAE. Designed to carry a pilot and four passengers, these innovative aircraft can reach speeds of up to 200 miles per hour. To put this into perspective, a journey from Dubai International Airport to Palm Jumeirah, which typically takes 45 minutes by car, could be reduced to a mere 10 minutes.

JoeBen Bevirt expressed enthusiasm about the project, stating, “There is incredible momentum behind the adoption of clean flight across the UAE. We’re excited to be working with a wide range of partners, including the GCAA, to lay the groundwork for one of the world’s first electric air taxi networks – delivering fast, clean and quiet journeys.”

Strategic Partnerships and Agreements

Joby Aviation’s commitment to the UAE market is evident through its strategic partnerships and agreements:

  • In February 2024, Joby signed a definitive agreement with Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) to launch air taxi services in the city.
  • April 2024 saw the company enter into a multilateral Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with key Abu Dhabi entities:
    • Department of Municipalities and Transport – Abu Dhabi (DMT)
    • Abu Dhabi Department of Economic Development (DED)
    • Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi (DCT Abu Dhabi)

These partnerships demonstrate Joby’s comprehensive approach to integrating air taxi services into the UAE’s transportation ecosystem.

UAE’s Vision for Advanced Air Mobility

The GCAA’s Director General, Saif Mohammed Al Suwaidi, highlighted the significance of Joby’s application: “The letter of intent for the operator certificate application from Joby Aviation marks a significant milestone in the UAE’s journey towards becoming a global leader in eVTOL (electric vertical take-off and landing) operations. Our readiness to support these advanced technologies underscores our commitment to fostering advanced air mobility solutions that will be part of the future of transportation in the UAE and beyond.”

Competition in the Air Taxi Market

While Joby Aviation leads in certification efforts, other players are also making strides in the UAE’s emerging air taxi market:

  • Archer Aviation, another US-based air transport company, has conducted over 400 test flights of its ‘Midnight’ air taxi.
  • Archer surpassed its target of 400 test runs four months ahead of schedule, completing 402 tests in the first eight months of 2024.

The Future of Air Taxis in the UAE

The race to bring air taxis to the UAE is heating up, with services expected to be available as early as 2025. This timeline aligns with the UAE’s vision of becoming a global hub for advanced transportation technologies.

As Joby Aviation and its competitors work towards certification and operational readiness, residents and visitors to the UAE can look forward to a future where urban air mobility becomes a reality. The introduction of air taxis promises to alleviate traffic congestion, reduce travel times, and offer a more sustainable mode of transportation in the Emirates’ bustling cities.

The coming years will be crucial in determining how quickly and effectively air taxi services can be integrated into the UAE’s existing transportation network. With strong support from regulatory bodies and a clear commitment from companies like Joby Aviation, the UAE is poised to lead the world in adopting this revolutionary form of urban transport.

As developments continue to unfold, all eyes will be on the UAE as it transforms its skies into highways of the future, setting a new standard for urban mobility worldwide.
