In the bustling city of Dubai, where skyscrapers touch the clouds and luxury cars line the streets, sits Ramjee Iyer, a testament to the power of perseverance and hard work. This 52-year-old Indian expat, now residing in the opulent Palm Jumeirah, has a story that epitomises the quintessential rags-to-riches tale, with a twist that only the UAE could provide.
Humble Beginnings and Early Struggles
Iyer’s journey began far from the gleaming towers of Dubai. At the tender age of 17, he found himself thrust into the world of blue-collar work, handling heavy construction fabrication for cement and oil plants in India. This early exposure to the gritty realities of manual labor would lay the foundation for his future success.
“I began with just Rs900 in 1993 (approximately Dh40), working about 11 hours daily,” Iyer recalls, his eyes reflecting the determination that has driven him throughout his life.
But life hadn’t always been so challenging for young Ramjee. Born into an affluent family in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, he once enjoyed the luxuries of being among the first to own a telephone and two cars. However, fate had other plans. His father’s business faced financial difficulties, coupled with health problems that ultimately led to his passing. The family’s fortunes crumbled, leaving Iyer with no money to finish school or attend college.
The Turning Point: A Stolen Salary and a Lesson in Resilience
Fast forward to 1995, and we find Iyer at a pivotal moment in his career. Having secured his first white-collar job, he received a salary of Rs1,200 (approximately Dh55 in today’s currency). Eager to celebrate this milestone, he decided to treat himself to a movie – a luxury he hadn’t indulged in for over a decade.
However, fate had one more cruel twist in store. As Iyer sat down in the theater, he realized his pocket had been picked. His wallet, containing his hard-earned first salary, was gone.
“Those few hours during the movie were the most depressing hours of my life,” Iyer shares, the memory still vivid after all these years. “After toiling for so many years to earn a proper salary, losing it in less than 24 hours was heartbreaking.”
This incident, though devastating at the time, would serve as a catalyst for Iyer’s future success. It instilled in him a deep appreciation for the value of money and the importance of financial security.
Climbing the Career Ladder
Undeterred by this setback, Iyer continued to climb the career ladder with remarkable tenacity. His journey took him from being a laborer in the construction of India’s thermal power plants and nuclear facilities to holding various positions within medium-sized construction companies.
“I have held nearly every position within a medium-sized construction company, including roles such as helper, fitter, welder, supervisor, project in charge, contract manager, and VP contracts,” Iyer proudly states. This diverse experience would prove invaluable in his future endeavors.
The UAE Chapter: From Sharjah to Success
At the age of 28, Iyer’s hard work paid off when he was nominated to serve as the Country Head of Operations for a company in Dubai. This move marked the beginning of a new chapter in his life – one that would see him transform from a struggling blue-collar worker to a multi-millionaire entrepreneur.
“When you come to Dubai, you work in that emirate but start your life in Sharjah,” Iyer explains, highlighting the common trajectory of many expats in the UAE. However, it wasn’t long before he was able to establish his own company full-fledged.
Iyer’s entrepreneurial spirit led him to venture into offshore oil and gas construction projects. He established a company that owned and managed vessels for marine and construction support, marking his entry into the world of big business.
The Fruits of Labor: From Struggle to Luxury
Today, Iyer’s life is a far cry from his humble beginnings. He owns several luxury assets, including a 66-foot yacht, a Ferrari, a Porsche, and a collection of premium watches that includes several Cartiers. However, he remains grounded, emphasizing the importance of maintaining a strong work ethic despite achieving success.
“To become successful, you don’t need to be born into a rich family or acquire a lot of degrees,” Iyer advises. “What one requires is intelligent hard work, remain ethical and do your job smartly. Then you’ll come up in life.”
The UAE: A Land of Opportunity
Iyer’s success story is not just a testament to his personal resilience but also to the opportunities provided by the UAE. He points out that the country is renowned for its supportive environment for business and entrepreneurship, with various programs and policies designed to support growth and integration into the broader economy.
“The UAE teaches people to do business cleanly and professionally, requiring thoroughness and ethical practices,” Iyer notes. “To succeed here, you must understand your product, target audience, and delivery methods. Professionalism and ethics are crucial for executing business effectively in the UAE.”
A New Chapter: From Retirement to Real Estate
After selling his successful company, Oceanking, in 2014, Iyer briefly retired and spent eight years traveling the world. However, the entrepreneurial spirit that had driven him throughout his life soon called him back to the business world.
Today, at 52, Iyer has returned to work as a developer, bringing his wealth of experience and ethical business practices to the real estate sector as the Chairman and Managing Director of Acube Developments.
Lessons from a Life Well-Lived
Reflecting on his journey, Iyer shares a profound insight:
“Even if I lose a million dirhams now, it wouldn’t compare to the despair I felt that day when I lost my first salary.”
This perspective serves as a powerful reminder of how far he has come and the value of every step in his journey.
Iyer’s story is more than just a tale of financial success. It’s a testament to the power of resilience, the importance of ethical business practices, and the opportunities that await those willing to work hard in the UAE. From a blue-collar worker who lost his first salary to a pickpocket, to a multi-millionaire developer shaping the Dubai skyline, Ramjee Iyer’s journey embodies the spirit of possibility that the UAE represents.
As Dubai continues to grow and evolve, stories like Iyer’s serve as an inspiration to aspiring entrepreneurs and a reminder that with determination, ethical practices, and the right environment, anything is possible. The UAE, with its forward-thinking policies and vibrant business ecosystem, continues to be a land where dreams can become reality, and where even the most humble beginnings can lead to extraordinary success.
