In a groundbreaking development for Indian expats and the aviation industry, Dubai-based businessmen Afi Ahmed and Ayub Kallada have secured initial approval for Air Kerala, a low-cost airline set to revolutionize travel between the UAE and Kerala. This milestone marks a significant step towards more affordable and accessible air travel for the expat community.

Key Highlights:

  1. Initial Approval Secured: Air Kerala, registered as Zettfly Aviation, has received a no-objection certificate (NOC) from India’s civil aviation ministry.
  2. Operational Scope: The airline has permission to operate scheduled commuter air transport services for three years.
  3. Visionary Leadership: Spearheaded by UAE entrepreneurs Afi Ahmed and Ayub Kallada, with Kanika Goyal on the board.
  4. Strategic Planning:
    • Initial fleet: Three ATR 72-600 aircraft
    • Focus on regional connectivity before expanding to international routes
    • Headquarters in Kochi, Kerala
  5. Economic Impact:
    • Expected investment: Approximately Dh1.1 billion
    • Job creation: At least 350 jobs in Kochi, with future opportunities in the UAE
  6. Future Plans:
    • Expansion to 20 aircraft before launching international routes
    • Dubai slated as one of the first international destinations

A Long-Awaited Dream

The concept of Air Kerala has been in the making since 2005 when it was first proposed by the Kerala government. Afi Ahmed’s purchase of the airkerala.com domain for Dh1 million last year reignited interest in the project.

“This is the result of years of our hard work,” Ahmed told Khaleej Times. “Several people questioned us and dismissed it, saying it would never become a reality. We still have a long way to go but the NOC is a big step for us.”

Next Steps

With the NOC secured, Air Kerala now faces crucial phases of development:

  1. Aircraft acquisition
  2. Compliance with regulatory requirements
  3. Obtaining the Air Operator’s Certificate (AOC)

Ayub Kallada emphasized the importance of these steps, stating, “This is a critical phase that ensures we meet all safety and operational standards set by the aviation authorities.”

Impact on Expat Travel

Once operational, Air Kerala aims to significantly reduce travel costs for expats. “Once international operation starts we will ensure affordable travel for all expats,” Ahmed promised, highlighting Dubai as a priority destination.

Boosting Regional Connectivity

Initially, Air Kerala will focus on connecting Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities with major metros in India, improving accessibility across regions. This strategy aligns with India’s growing emphasis on enhancing regional air connectivity.

The launch of Air Kerala represents a major leap forward in affordable air travel options for Indian expats in the UAE. As the airline progresses towards its inaugural flight, it promises to strengthen ties between Dubai and Kerala while opening up new opportunities for trade, tourism, and cultural exchange.
