The Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) has taken a significant step towards ensuring a sustainable water supply in Dubai by commissioning a new water reservoir in Enkhali and connecting it to the city’s water network.
AED287.8m Investment in Water Security
The new reservoir has a storage capacity of 120 million imperial gallons (MIG), with a cost of AED287.8m ($78.3m). According to Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD and CEO of DEWA, “The 120 MIG reservoir in Enkhali and the other reservoirs in Lusaily, Hassiyan, and Hatta support DEWA’s strategy to increase the efficiency and reliability of water networks, raise water flow and volume of water reserves to meet the growing demand and sustainable development of Dubai.”
A Key Component of DEWA’s Water Strategy
When completed, the reservoirs will have a combined storage capacity of 1121.3 MIG of desalinated water, up from the current 1001.3 MIG. This investment is part of DEWA’s Aquifer Storage and Recovery (ASR) project for desalinated water, which has already completed its first phase. The full-scale project, set to be completed by 2025, will have a storage capacity of up to 6,000 million imperial gallons of water, making it the largest ASR of its kind in the world.
Meeting International Standards
Abdullah Obaidullah, Executive Vice President of Water and Civil at DEWA, emphasized that the Enkhali reservoir follows the highest international standards.
