Online scams have become increasingly prevalent in the UAE, with loan scams and fake job offers emerging as new threats to residents’ financial security. In this article, we’ll explore the latest scams and provide tips on how to protect yourself from financial fraud.

The Loan Scam: A Dubious Lending Company

Cristy, a 35-year-old Filipina expat, fell victim to a loan scam that promised quick collateral-free loans to overseas Filipino workers. She deposited P20,000 (about Dh1,250) as a processing fee, only to be told that her loan was cancelled due to a “low credit rating.” The lending company then demanded an additional P50,000 (Dh3,125) to remove the low credit rating, promising to release the loan immediately.

Cristy ended up paying P70,000 (Dh4,375) and received nothing in return. The loan officer blocked her calls and messages, leaving her with a significant financial loss.

Busy Scammers, Busy Victims

Attorney Barney Almazar, director of corporate-commercial department at Gulf Law, has seen a troubling increase in online scams. “Scammers have become busier and more aggressive in looking for victims,” he notes.

In addition to loan scams, fake job offers are also on the rise. These messages promise high incomes for minimal work, such as completing simple tasks or participating in surveys. Victims are often required to provide personal information or pay a fee to get started.

Protecting Yourself from Online Predators

From a legal standpoint, these scams not only represent significant financial fraud but also pose severe risks to personal security and privacy. Here are some legal and practical steps to protect yourself:

  • Verify sources: Always verify the legitimacy of financial institutions or companies offering loans or jobs.
  • Avoid upfront fees: Be cautious of loan offers requiring upfront fees before approval.
  • Report suspicious activity: Report any suspicious messages or offers to the Police Cybercrime Department or the Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA).
  • Avoid clicking links: Be cautious about clicking on links in unsolicited messages.
  • Use two-factor authentication: Enable two-factor authentication on financial accounts and services.
  • Monitor financial statements: Regularly review bank and credit card statements for unauthorized transactions.
  • Update security software: Ensure devices have the latest security updates and antivirus software.
