The UAE Ministry of Health and Prevention (MoHAP) has announced new procedures and regulations for cases where abortion is permitted. The regulations outline specific scenarios where abortion is legal, ensuring the safety and well-being of women in the UAE.
Committee Evaluation
Requests for abortion will be evaluated by a committee consisting of three UAE doctors, including an obstetrician-gynecologist and psychiatrist, along with a prosecution representative. The committee may seek additional specialist advice to ensure thorough consideration of each case.
Permissible Cases
Abortion is permitted in the following cases:
- If continuing the pregnancy endangers the woman’s life and there is no alternative to save her.
- If the fetus has severe proven deformities affecting its health and life, supported by a medical report.
- Other case definitions, provided the gestation period does not exceed 120 days.
Procedures and Facilities
Procedures must take place in facilities licensed by the health authority to perform abortions, and be conducted by a licensed specialist obstetrician-gynecologist. The woman’s life must not be at risk due to medical complications.
Privacy and Confidentiality
The new controls obligate healthcare facilities to maintain the privacy and confidentiality of a pregnant woman undergoing an abortion. The health authority will monitor and supervise licensed facilities, evaluating their compliance with regulations.
Empowering Women’s Health
The UAE’s new abortion regulations prioritize women’s health and safety, ensuring access to essential healthcare services while maintaining the highest standards of medical ethics.
