The UAE is experiencing the full force of the summer season, with temperatures already reaching a scorching 49°C. As the country transitions into astronomical summer, residents are wondering how long the season will last and when the year’s longest day will occur.

The Start of Astronomical Summer
The third week of June marks the beginning of astronomical summer, a period characterized by the sun’s poles tilted closest to the sun. This phenomenon brings longer days and hotter temperatures.

The Longest Day of the Year
On June 21, the UAE will experience the longest day of the year, with temperatures expected to rise even higher. According to Dr. Ahmed Habib, a climate expert from the National Centre of Meteorology (NCM), the mean temperatures will increase approximately 2-3°C compared to May.

The End of Kanat Al Thuraya
The Arab world is currently experiencing the end of the spring season, known as ‘Kanat Al Thuraya’, which typically lasts until June 7. During this period, the air is dry with decreased humidity levels.

Intense Summer in Mid-July
Experts predict that the most intense summer period will start in mid-July and continue until the end of August. This period is characterized by high temperatures and humidity levels, which can soar up to 90%. Dust storms originating from the desert can also occur, bringing powerful gusts of wind and swirling clouds of hot sand.

The End of Summer
The UAE summer months officially continue from June to September. Astronomically, September 22 marks the end of summer. The much-celebrated Suhail star rises in the third week of August, signaling the end of peak summer heat. Temperatures gradually decrease as the country transitions into its autumn season.

The Impact of Global Warming
Climate experts predict that the UAE summer will be extended by a few days each year, with increased extreme events by the end of the 21st century. Dr. Diana Francis, Senior Research Scientist and Head of the Environmental and Geophysical Sciences (ENGEOS) Lab at Khalifa University, notes that the region will experience a warmer and drier climate each year.
