Scammers are getting bolder, targeting UAE residents with fake passive income opportunities on WhatsApp. Don’t fall prey to these scams, and learn how to spot the red flags.
The Scam Unfolds
A Khaleej Times reporter was added to a WhatsApp group, supposedly created by Enhmedia Digital Marketing Company, offering a chance to earn passive income by completing simple tasks. But this is just the latest iteration of the part-time job scam.
How It Works
The scammer creates a WhatsApp group, adding victims and promising them a chance to earn money by liking YouTube posts, following, and commenting. The potential earnings? A whopping Dh800 daily.
The scammer creates a sense of legitimacy by apologizing for invading your privacy and stating that minors are prohibited from joining.
But here’s the catch: it’s all a ruse to get you to divulge your personal and financial information.
The Consequences
One victim, a Dubai hotelier, lost her entire life savings of Dh66,000 to this scam. Don’t let it happen to you.
How to Protect Yourself
- Be cautious of unsolicited messages on WhatsApp.
- Never disclose your bank details or personal information to unknown individuals.
- Report fraudulent activities to the authorities immediately.
If you’re a victim of this scam, report it to the Dubai Police at toll-free number 901 or +971 4 203 6341, or use their e-crime online platform. For those in Abu Dhabi, contact the Aman Service at 800-2626.
Stay safe online, and don’t let scammers get the best of you!
