Working in a competitive market can reap benefits, but can also fuel a drive that makes workers work more than their remittance to stay on top of the game – but is it wise to ask for a salary hike?
Timing is Key to Asking for a Salary Hike
A viral video by TikTok user Kristopher Barsanti (@krisdrinkslemonade) in 2022 sparked a conversation about underpayment and the consequences of not asking for a pay rise. Barsanti’s video resonated with many employees who could relate to being underpaid.
But, Should You Ask for a Pay Rise?
Arabian Business consulted two career experts to shed light on the best approach to asking for a salary hike.
“Asking for a salary hike must be linked to performance, wherein an employee must be able to showcase the return on investment (ROI) delivered,” explained Dubai-based career coach Zeta Yarwood.
Timing is crucial when asking for a pay rise. Book a time in your manager’s diary, choose a quiet, undisturbed place, and clearly state what you want, why you want it, and be open to feedback.
Common Mistakes to Avoid While Asking for a Salary Hike
Avoid making the pay rise about something other than performance, such as length of time in a role or private fiscal needs. Failing to consider the company’s financial situation or perspective before making demands or ultimatums shows a lack of emotional intelligence.
Asking for a pay rise can be intimidating, but with the right approach, preparation, and mindset, you can increase your chances of getting the raise you’re looking for.
Remember, some companies will have strict policies about raises, and your line manager may be extremely limited in what they can give. Be open to other forms of incentives and compensation, and approach the negotiation with a collaborative win-win mindset.
