The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) in Dubai has successfully completed a project to upgrade 900 lighting units along 9km of Sheikh Rashid Street to energy-efficient LED lights. This key road passes through the city across 10 lanes, and the upgrades will significantly reduce energy usage and costs while increasing safety through improved lighting.

The project was conducted in three phases over six months, from Deira to the intersection with Sheikh Khalifa Street. This initiative supports Dubai’s plan to reduce energy consumption and promote sustainability, aligning with the UAE’s targets set in the Sustainability Initiative 2024.

According to Abdullah Lootah, Director of Road and Facilities Maintenance at RTA, “The project involved re-engineering the street lighting to incorporate sustainable and energy-efficient LED lighting, maintaining our assets and commitment to sustainable development and environmental protection in Dubai and the UAE.”

The new LED lights provide twice as much brightness as conventional lights, with a brightness of 4,000 units compared to 2,000 units. This effectively doubles the quality of lighting. LED lights also produce less heat and are free from harmful materials, enhancing nighttime visibility and safety.

This upgrade aligns with RTA’s commitment to developing roads and infrastructure with innovative, climate-suited solutions that support sustainability goals.
