The United Arab Emirates has embarked on an ambitious journey to transform its energy landscape, and Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) is at the forefront of this revolution.

The UAE Energy Strategy 2050, launched in 2017, set the stage for the country’s commitment to balancing energy supply and demand while meeting environmental targets. DEWA has been instrumental in driving this vision forward, implementing a range of innovative projects and strategies to enhance energy efficiency and reduce dependence on conventional energy sources.

DEWA’s Dubai Clean Energy Strategy 2050

The authority’s ambitious strategy aims to make Dubai a global clean energy hub by 2050, with a net-zero target in sight. To achieve this goal, DEWA has halted new fossil fuel-based projects, prioritizing clean energy sources in water desalination projects and achieving an impressive fuel consumption efficiency of about 90% in its production units.

Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park

The world’s largest single-site solar park, the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park, is a flagship project that showcases the UAE’s commitment to clean energy. With a planned production capacity of 5,000 MW by 2030, the park has already achieved an impressive production capacity of 2,627 MW.

Green Hydrogen Project

DEWA’s pioneering Green Hydrogen project, the first of its kind in the Middle East and North Africa region, uses solar power to produce hydrogen. This groundbreaking initiative explores various applications of hydrogen, including energy production and transportation, offering promising prospects for the future.

Innovation and R&D

DEWA’s commitment to research and development (R&D) is evident in the establishment of the Innovation Centre and the R&D Centre at the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park. These centers focus on finding clean and efficient energy solutions using Fourth Industrial Revolution technologies.

Shams Dubai Initiative

The Shams Dubai initiative promotes the use of solar energy in buildings, contributing to the diversification of the energy mix and reducing air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions. Over 620 MW of solar capacity has been installed by the end of 2023, aligning with Dubai’s 2040 Urban Master Plan.

EV Green Charger Initiative

DEWA’s EV Green Charger Initiative has facilitated the growth of electric vehicles in the region, with over 390 EV charging stations deployed across Dubai. The authority plans to increase the number of charging stations to 1,000 by 2025, keeping pace with the rising demand for clean transportation.

DEWA’s relentless pursuit of innovation and sustainability has positioned Dubai as a leader in the global clean energy transition. As the authority continues to drive this revolution, the future looks bright for a cleaner, greener Dubai.
