Dubai’s food industry is witnessing a remarkable shift, with local restaurants expanding their presence globally. This trend is a testament to the city’s growing reputation as a gastronomy capital.
According to Hoor Al Khaja, senior VP of international operations at Dubai Department of Economy and Tourism (DET), “Earlier, we used to bring international brands here, but now our brands are going international.” This is evident in the success stories of restaurants like Kinoya, which opened in Harrods, and The Maine, which moved to the UK after establishing itself in Dubai.
The concerted effort of the government has played a crucial role in promoting Dubai as a global destination for food and gastronomy. The arrival of big names like Michelin has further boosted the city’s reputation, recognizing it as a hub for high-end, Michelin-starred, and experiential restaurants. Additionally, the city’s mid-market restaurants and street food vendors offer a diverse range of options, catering to tourists and locals alike.
What sets Dubai apart is its authentic representation of various cuisines, thanks to the presence of over 200 nationalities. Each nationality brings its authentic flavors, and the access to a wide range of spices ensures that the dishes are as authentic as they get.
Tourism in Dubai is also on the rise, with 5.18 million international overnight visitors during the first quarter of this year, an 11% increase over the same period in 2023. The Dubai Department of Economy and Tourism (DET) attributes this growth to its various campaigns, including the Sustainable Tourism Strategy, which focuses on low-carbon footprint hotels. Initiatives like the Dubai Can initiative, installing water coolers across the city, and the Dubai Reef project have enhanced the city’s appeal to tourists.
In today’s digital age, tourists are increasingly tech-savvy, researching their travel destinations thoroughly online. The DET acknowledges this shift, ensuring a strong online presence across 40 markets.
As Dubai’s culinary scene continues to evolve, its reputation as a gastronomy capital is set to grow, attracting food enthusiasts from around the world.
