As working parents across the UAE struggle to balance professional and family obligations, employers that offer parent-friendly work arrangements are more likely to retain their staff.

A recent report by the Abu Dhabi Early Childhood Authority (ECA) revealed that more than 70 percent of respondents would consider leaving their job if flexible working options were not available to them. Moreover, 40 percent had either left their job or begun looking for a new one in search of better flexibility.

What are Parent-Friendly Workplaces?

Parent-friendly workplaces are organizations that offer policies, practices, and a culture that supports working parents. This includes offering flexibility, listening to the needs of families, and welcoming back new parents actively after parental leave.

The Importance of Parent-Friendly Workplaces

Balancing professional and personal commitments can be challenging for working families in the UAE, which may lead to stress or employees leaving their jobs. However, recent studies show that employers who offer flexible working options and favourable parental leaves are better equipped to retain top talent and improve overall performance.

The Parent-Friendly Label Program

To address this issue, the ECA launched the Parent-Friendly Label (PFL) program in 2021, the first of its kind in the region. Since then, the program has attracted 75 organizations across the UAE, nearly half of which have proactively improved their policies.

Benefits of the PFL Program

From the accredited PFL members, 35 percent have adopted flexible work policies, 35 percent have improved lactation facilities or hours, and 22 percent have improved parental leave benefits. Employees at parent-friendly workplaces are nine times more likely to recommend and advocate for their employers. Moreover, organizations that have implemented policies have reported up to 20 percent increased work productivity among their employees.

Who Can Apply to the PFL Program?

Any private sector, semi-government sector or third sector organisation that has a valid trade licence or operates in a free zone in the UAE can apply, at no direct cost to them, to earn the Parent-friendly Label.

How to Apply

Interested businesses can complete the online application form on the ECA website. All applications are evaluated by an independent judging panel of senior officials from across the UAE.

Conclusion

By offering flexible work arrangements, UAE employers can attract, motivate, and retain top talent. The Parent-Friendly Label program is a valuable initiative that recognizes and supports organizations that prioritize the well-being of their employees.
