The startup scene in Saudi Arabia has grown significantly over the past ten years, with 200 of the country’s most well-funded companies raising an astounding $3.3 billion in total funding. Examining more closely exposes details that highlight the dynamics of innovation in the area.
In a groundbreaking research conducted by MAGNiTT and SVC, we have explored the origin tales of these significant endeavours. It should come as no surprise that collaborations have proven essential; in 44% of these firms, two founders raised 53% of the capital.
Newcomers have a strong entrepreneurial drive; 66% of them launch their own business. Experienced experts provide a counterbalance to the youthful enthusiasm, with 36% of the founders having over ten years of experience.
In contrast to the worldwide trend towards gender diversity in business, Saudi Arabia stands out. With 94% of the total and 98% of the capital going to their businesses, male founders predominate in this scene. In sharp contrast, only 6% of entrepreneurs are female, and their businesses have had difficulty obtaining the same level of funding.
However, the environment is diversified in terms of experience and ambition despite these differences. It is clear that forming teams of three or more co-founders have increased by 15% in recent trends, whereas smaller founding teams were preferred in earlier years.
The CEO of MAGNiTT, Philip Bahoshy, highlights the importance of these analytical findings and how they may be used to shape laws that support a more vibrant and inclusive startup scene in Saudi Arabia.
The trajectory of Saudi Arabia’s startup ecosystem provides important insights for the future. Its ten-year journey not only showcases the thriving spirit of entrepreneurship, but it also highlights areas in need of reform, notably in creating a climate that is more welcoming to female founders. This development, marked by a fascinating fusion of ambition, expertise, and a drive for innovation, offers a positive outlook for the future of the business scene in the area.
