Dubai families are bracing for budget adjustments as a significant number of private schools are set to raise tuition fees. Following the Knowledge and Human Development Authority’s (KHDA) recent announcement, approved schools could see fee hikes up to 5.2%, calibrated with their performance in the latest inspections.

The education cost index (ECI) declared at 2.6% serves as a baseline for the 2024-25 academic fee adjustments. Schools witnessing a drop in their ratings, however, will not experience this financial latitude.

For many Dubai parents, this news brings financial stress amid escalating living costs. American expatriate Natalia Miranda expressed concerns, saying even the minimum increase poses a “substantial” challenge to the family budget. The continuous climb in educational expenses, amidst stagnant salaries and rising inflation, underscores a growing financial strain for parents valuing quality education.

Rishi Talwalkar, a parent calculating the cumulative impact, echoed this sentiment. The anticipated hike translates into a noticeable financial burden, disproportionately affecting families with multiple school-going children and drawing attention to the escalating cost of living vis-a-vis fixed incomes.

School heads argue the fee adjustment is critical for advancing infrastructure and faculty development, essential for maintaining educational standards. According to Dino Varkey, CEO of GEMS Education, these increments are pivotal for enriching the learning environment and ensuring competitive teacher salaries. Rashmi Nandkeolyar of DPS Dubai highlighted their efforts in optimizing resource management to uphold educational excellence without significantly impacting parents.

The fee increase framework aligns with school inspection outcomes to foster educational advancement. Schools exhibiting improvement can adjust fees by up to double the ECI of 2.6%, while those maintaining their high standards are permitted more modest increases. This escalation matrix, marking the second consecutive year of permissible hikes post-COVID-19 pandemic freezes, is indicative of Dubai’s commitment to quality education balanced against economic realities.

This development calls for adept financial planning from parents to accommodate these inevitable hikes, ensuring their children’s educational journey remains unaffected. As Dubai’s educational landscape continues to evolve, balancing quality and affordability remains a collective endeavor for schools and families alike.
