In the wake of the pandemic, the UAE took significant strides to honor and facilitate the invaluable contributions of nurses by revising laws and offering long-term residency options like the Golden Visa. Further easing the path, the Ministry of Health and Prevention, alongside health authorities in Dubai and other Emirates, announced the elimination of the mandatory two-year work experience for certain nursing roles in 2022.

Educational Qualifications for Nursing Roles

The Dubai Health Authority outlines specific educational criteria for different nursing positions:

  • Registered Nurse: A bachelor’s degree in nursing from a full-time course, lasting a minimum of three years, is requisite. Those with a two-year degree from recognized countries must be registered in their country.
  • Assistant Nurse: An 18-month diploma in nursing is the minimum requirement.
  • School Nurse: Applicants need registered nurse qualifications plus a Valid Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification.
  • Nurse Practitioner: Beyond registered nurse requirements, a clinical master’s or doctoral degree in nursing or equivalent qualifications related to pharmacology, diagnostics, or advanced health assessment is essential.
  • Specialty Nurse: A clinical master’s in a nursing specialty, lasting at least one year, qualifies one as a speciality nurse. A three-year bachelor’s degree in a nursing speciality is also acceptable.

Experience Requirements

Changes in Dubai’s laws now permit registered and assistant nurses to practice without prior experience. However, specific roles like school nurses and nurse practitioners still require practical experience post-qualification, varying with the position.

Additional Considerations

  • Graduation from nationally or internationally recognized institutions.
  • Graduates from UAE institutions need accreditation by the Ministry of Education.
  • Six months of clinical training post-graduation are required for graduates from UAE or GCC countries, applicable only to certain nursing roles.

Licensing Process in Dubai

To begin practicing, nurses need to navigate the licensing process diligently:

  1. Pre-Registration: Assemble necessary documents, including passport photos, copies of your passport, and for some specialties, a logbook of surgical experiences.
  2. Application: Utilize the Dubai Health Authority’s Sheryan portal to complete the Self Assessment Tool and submit your application, accompanied by a Dh200 fee for nurses and midwives.
  3. Assessment: The DHA reviews applications, possibly requiring an oral assessment for some roles. Passing this phase leads to registration in the Dubai Medical Registry.
  4. License Activation: The hiring medical facility is responsible for activating the healthcare professional’s license, marking the final step in the integration process.

Dubai’s evolving policies reflect its dedication to enhancing the healthcare sector by embracing talented nursing professionals from around the world. This streamlined path not only simplifies entering the nursing profession in Dubai for expatriates but also signifies Dubai’s commitment to providing superior healthcare services through a diverse and skilled nursing workforce.
